to do non-violence. It is only violence that can be done. Thus, it can be said that, non-violence is refraining oneself from violence. Importance for non-violence :
Although non-violence does not exist, it is given prime importance in Jain religion. It is because with every act we do, we perform hinsa, and attract more and more karma. To minimize this inflow of karma, we will have to reduce hinsa as much as possible. Thus, by practicing non-violence we can avoid inflow of karma and reduce the cycle for birth and death.
Forms of Hinsa :
In order to practise non-violence, we will have to avoid hinsa (violence). To avoid hinsa one should know where and how he is doing hinsa and what are the different its forms. Although all religions talks about hinsa. It is only Jain religion which shows the complete indepth classification of hinsa. Hinsa in Jain religion is not only limited to gross violence, but also covers cubtle violence. Jainism considers harm to any living being may it be human, animal, plant or a micro organism as violene. To add to it, there is a unique concept of self violence in Jainism. Everytime we harm someone, or intent to harm someone. We are attracting karma. In our attempt to harm someone, others might or might not get injured depending on his karma, but it is for sure that we will attract karma which will definitely harm us. Thus with every misdeed, we attract karma and get involved into self violence. There are three modes through which we can do hinsa. They are through physical body action, through our words
