He was Brahmin before his conversion by Bhadrabahu, an additional motive for his revolt against the Nandas with Chankya is supported by Kharvela Inscription, as to the patronage of Jainism. He attended Bhadrabahu during his last. After doing penance for twelve years on Chandragiri hills he died there. The death of Bhadrabahu took place about 170 years after Mahavir. From Sravan Belgoda inscriptions we come to know the successors of Chandragupt. The first one is Yatindrakund, than Umaswami, the compiler of Tattvarth Sutra, Gridhhapichha, Balakpiccha and the famous Samantbhadra. Inscription no. 44 of Sravan Belgoda records some interesting accounts of Samantbhadra. He was a great missionary who tried far & wide Jain doctrines and he met with no opposition from other sect wherever he went, he is also author of an important Jain work, Apt Mimansa, the most authoritative exposition of the Sadvada doctrain. Pujaypad, the author of Jinendra Vyakaran is another famous name is the rich Jain literary Karnataka. The ascetics of Karnataka: The Puranas give the whole account of the ascetics of Karnataka. The monks and the nuns lived together under one authority for spiritual liberation. Though the practice was to stay in a deserted house or under a tree or in a cave. The monks observed complete nudity. consumed food once in a day in a standing position avoiding ratribhojan completely. They meditated in the secluded place and observed the rain retreat though they led a wandering life throughout the year. They further made places their abode specially built for them.
