Scholars like Buhler are known to hold that the subsect named Kharatara started in V. Sam. 1204 (i. e. 1147 A. D.) with Jinadattasuri who is said to have been a proud man as is evident from his pert answers to others mentioned by Sumatigani; that he was, therefore, called Kharatara by the people, but he gloried in the new appellation and willingly accepted it100. 5.6. At the close of his work, Buddhisagara has given a few details about his preceptorial geneology, which tallies with those given by Dhanesvara (1095 V. Sam., i. e. 1038 A. D.) towards the conclusion of his Surasundaricariyam in Prakrit. From it we come to know that he traces his line from the last Tirthankara Vardhamana Mahavira down to Vajrasvami, through Sudharma, Jambu, Prabhava and Sayyambhava, and further in the line from Vardhamanasuri to himself101, adding a reference to two more assistant teachers, viz., Jinesvarasuri and Allakopadhyaya who hailed in the line of Vajrasvami before Vardhamanasuri102. Both Dhanesvara Muni103 and Abhayadevasuri104 express profound respect for both Jinesvarasuri and Buddhisagarasuri as their 'guru'. And, the latter two, too, mention each other in their own works 105, 5.7. Apart from Jinesvarasuri, Abhayadevasuri and Dhanesvara, there are other monks too who have alluded to Buddhisagarasuri, viz., Jinacandra, the author of the Samvega-rangasala (1125 V. Sam., i. e. 1068 A. D.), Gunacandra the author of the Mahaviracarita (1139 V. Sam. i. e. 1082 A. D.) and Padmaprabha the author of the Kunthunathacarita 106 The author himself of the Pancagranthi Vyakarana has clearly mentioned the date as the year 1080 of the Vikrama Era, i. e. 1023 A. D. on which, and the place Jabalipur, i. e. modern Jhalor, where he completed this work 107 Prabhacandra mentions that when, as Sripati and Sridhara, the two brothers arrived in Dhara after their education, King Bhoja was ruling there108 The date of the Paramara King Bhojaraja is 996-1054 A. D109. And when, as Jinesvara and Buddhisagara, the two went to Patan at the instance of Vardhamanasuri, Durlabharaja was ruling there'10. Durlabharaja is known to have ruled in Gujarat from V. Sam. 1057 to 1078, i. e., 1010-1022 A. D. Now, when as young men the two brothers went to Dhara, they had already finished their education of the Brahmanic lore. This implies that their age at that time was atleast twenty-five and twenty-three years, respectively,
