Yudhisthira Mimamsaka has further observed that in ancient time all the four auxiliary texts used to be incorporated in the Sabdanusasana, presumably while teaching or explaining the concerned text of the rules. But * later on since the human faculty of memorizing gradually began to deteriorate, the texts of various disciplines were subjected to the process of being compiled in the sutra style distinguished for its brevity and highly conducive to easy memorising. Consequently, the auxiliary texts (khila-patha) of Vyakarana started to be compiled as independent texts. At the same time they were expected to be committed to memory along with the text of the rules (sutra-patha). 3.4. Although the book of the rules proper (sutra-patha) became highly compact and brief, it also entailed independent memorization, which gradually discontinued, specially with the advent of the custom of compiling independent works pertaining to the process of deriving grammatical forms (rupa-siddhi-prakriya) of linguistic items by application of the sutras of the text of rules. A good specimen of the ancient practice of understating the sutra-patha with the help of the khila-pathas simultaneously is found in the form of the famous Kasika-vrtti of Vamana-Jayaditya on Panini's Astadhyayi. The author Vamana specifically testifies to this effect by declaring at the outset of his commentary that he has accumulated the essence of the system (tantra) which is scattered in the Vrtti (i. e. Sutra), Bhasya (i. e. Patanjali's Vyakarana Mahabhasya), Dhatu-parayana (i. e. Dhatu-patha), Nama-parayana (i. e. Ganapatha), and others (i. e. Unadi, Phis, Siksa)62. Then, he has pointed out that his commentary called 'Kasika' is fortified with Istis (of Patanjali), Upasamkhyanas (i. e. Vartikas of Katyayana), correct Gana-patha, revelation of the inner secret meaning of the sutras, and the process of the derived wordforms by application of various rules (vyutpanna-rupa-siddhi)63. 3.5. The great disadvantage of compilation of auxiliary independent texts was that the custom of memorizing the Prakriya texts set in, and it encouraged the tendency to neglect or skip the study the Sabdanusasana in its original form of the Astadhyayi along with the auxiliary texts, with the ultimate result that people who have devoted their whole life-span to the study of the Paninian Vyakarana-sastra hardly study the auxiliary texts.
