possibility of giving the name Laghīyastraya. It is but natural that he should quote these for the first time as Laghīyastraya. However, it is also possible that it is Anantavīrya who coined the name Laghiya straya for the trio of pramānapraveśa, Naya-praveśa and Pravacanapraveśa.
Thus Laghīyastraya (LT) includes the above three treatises, the total number of slokas being 78. At the end of Nayapraveśa, we have "mohenaiva paro’pi” which is not commented either by Prabhācandra in NKC or by Abhayacandra in Tātparyavrtti nor does it have any consistency with the text. Hence it can be regarded as a spurious addition.
Akalanka himself wrote a commentary on LT not with a view to explain and interpret the content of the whole text but to clarify ideas of the text. Really speaking the text and the commentary are to be taken as a whole.
It is apparent that Akalanka followed in this regard the chapter on Svārthānumāna of PV and its vrtti of Dharmakirti, this is also the case with the Pramānasangraha and its Vrtti of Akalanka. Prabhācandra refers to the prose section of LT, as Vivrti when he says “Vivrtim Vivrnvannäha”.
Prabhācandra’s Nyāyakumudacandra is an exhaustive commentary on LT and its Vivrti.
Laghiya straya contains six chapters1 embodying the exhaustive discussion of philosophy in general and epistemology in particular Pramāna, naya and niksepa. (4) Nyāya-viniscaya and its Vrttia :
Nyāya-vini scaya written in verses and prose, is designed after Pramānavini ścaya of Dharmakirti, the original MS. of which is not available. Vădirāja has written a commentary on NV, but on the ślokas only. I have restored the NV by culling words from the commentary of Vädirāja,3 but the reconstruction of Vrtti is impossible in absence of any commentary ; there can be no doubt about the existence of Vịtti of NV. Since it is quoted in SVT.4 That commentary was called Vţtti, is proved by these words "Vrttimadhyavartitvāt” etc. It appears, this Vịtti, also known by the name "cūrņi”, is quoted by Vādirāja in NVV,5 thus "tathā ca sūktam cürnau deva sya vacanam-Samāropavyavacchedāt”.
