INTRODUCTION
But Ramanath Shastri in his intro. to Brhati vol. II gives the period of Mandana to be 670-720 A.D1. M. M. Kuppusvami has proved the time of Mandana Miśra to be 615-690 A.D2.

It is but definite that Mandana Miśra must be posterior to Kumarila and Prabhakara and a contemporary of Dharmakirti.
The lower limit of the date of Karnagomi must be fixed as later than Prajñākara (A.D. 660-720) because Karnagomi refers to Prajñākara and the upper limit is the date of Akalanka because Akalanka refers to Karnagomi: he must have flourished between Prajñākara and Akalanka, therefore, Karnagomi must be placed in the later part of 7th c. A.D. and in the earlier part of 8th c. A.D.
Kumārila's attack on Buddhist theory of Pakṣadharmatvarupa, is replied by Karnagomi in PVVT3, and Akalanka criticises this view of Karnagomi in his Pramanasamgraha (p. 104) in these words: "Kālādidharmikalpanayamatiprasangah". Further, SVT (p. 158) refers to the Kärikä :— "Yathartharupaṁ buddher vitatapratibhāsanāt", as the view held by Karṇaka; and also SV (p. 158) Svarupamantarena etc.' is explained by Anantavirya :Kallakastvaha". It seems, Kallaka is identical with "Karnaka".

21. Sāntaraksita:
Santarakṣita is one of the most brilliant commentators of Dharmakirti. He has commented on Dharmakirti's Vadanyaya. His other monumental work is Tattvasangraha. It is mentioned that he flourished in 705762 A.D1. He undertook his first journey to Tibet in 743 A.D. Probably he had finished his Tattvasangraha before his departure for Tibet. There are several sentences and verses which go to show the influence of Santarakṣita on Akalanka, e.g. compare "Vṛkṣe Säkhāḥ Silascäge ityeṣā laukikī matiḥ?” (TS. p. 267)-with, "taneva pasyan pratyeti ŝakhā vṛkṣepi laukikāḥ” (Praṁānasangraha, v. 26; NV. v. 104); "evam yasya prameyatva" (TS. 885) etc., with "tadevam prameyatvasattvadir yatra......etc." (Astaśati, Aştasahasri, p. 58); and, “astihīkṣanikädyākhyā”; (TS. p. 888) etc., with NV. v. 407.
In this way we have seen that Akalanka refers and refutes the views of the various commentators of Dharmakirti such as Prajñākaragupta, Arcata, Santabhadra, Dharmottara, Karṇagomi and Santarakṣita.
