INTRODUCTION
his namesake, the author of Vakyapadiya; the latter has denounced the use of Apabhramsa words in Vakyapadiya and he established the existence of nitya-sabda-Brahma.
It seems that confusion has been made in regard to Bhartṛhari, the author of Vakyapadiya identifying him with his namesake, the Buddhist about whose death I-Tsing refers. Besides Kumarila quotes and explains some verses from Vakyapadiya (II. 81). It is repeated twice in his slokavārtika (p. 251-3). Kumārila subjects to criticism the lines, 'tattvāvabodhah......(vakyapadiya 1. 7) in Tantravārtika (p. 209-10). The ten types of sentences expounded by Vakyapadiya (II. 1-2) are criticised in MSLV by Kumarila. Kumārila subjects Bhartṛhari's doctrine of sphota to searching criticism.
Dharmakirti does not spare Bhartṛhari. The former refutes the sphota theory in his PV (III. 257) and PVV.1
Akalanka refers to Bhartṛhari's Vakyapadiya (I. 79): 'indriyasyaiva samskaraḥ sabdasyobhayasya va', and criticises in his TV (p. 486) the contention of this Kārikā; further he quotes a line from a Karika-"sastresu prakriyabhedairavidyaivopavarnyate", from Vakyapadiya (II. 235) in his TV.
(p. 57).
13. Kumārila:
It is regarded that Kumarila, the outstanding exponent of Mimāmsā, flourished during the seventh century A.D. He, as referred to above, quotes Bhatṛhari. We have discussed the date of Bhartṛhari lying in between 4th and 5th centuries A.D. It was believed by K. B. Pathak that Kumārila refers to Dharmakīrti and criticises him. In support of this contention Pathak refers to the commentaries of Parthasarathi Miśra and Sucarita Miśra. Pathak refers to some verses of Kumārila as quoting the views of Dharmakirti.
But the careful reading of the verses will reveal the truth that the said verses form the purvapakṣa of Buddhists. Though the commentators quote Dharmakirti's 'avibhago'pi' (PV. II. 354). etc., still it can be said, there is much difference in verbal expression. The views criticised by Kumārila were held by Vasubandhu and Dignaga etc.
On the other hand, it will be evident from the following discussions, that Dharmakirti himself criticises Kumārila, who inflicted a severe attack on the conception of Dharmajña in these words:
