2. THE AUTHORS: ANANTAVIRYA
83
pañjikā is written for Säntisena at the request of Hirap, the beloved son of Vaijeya. The author of the Pañjika refers to Prabhācandra's Prameyakamalamārtaṇḍa in these words. "Prabhenduvacanodāracandrikāprasare sati” therefore, we can say that he must be posterior to Prabhācandra (980-1015 A.D.) and obviously must be a different person from Anantavirya, quoted by Prabhācandra, as the commentator of Akalanka. Pt. Aśādhara, in the Svopajñatika on Anagaradharmāmṛta, quotes the benedictory verse of Prameyaratnamālā. He completed the Anagaradharmamṛta in V. Samvat 1300 (1243 A.D.)1. Hence, we can say that Anantavirya, the author of Prameyaratnamālā belongs to the period of 1065-1243 A.D. His Prameyaratnamālā seems to have influenced Hemacandra's Pramāṇamīmām sā here and there2. Hemacandra belongs to the period of 1088-1173 A.D.3, that is to say, that Anantavirya, the author of Prameyaratnamālā, must be a scholar of eleventh century A.D., hence he must be altogether a different person from his namesake, the commentator of SV.
(8) Kavicakravarti Mallişena had completed his Mahāpurāṇa in Šaka Samvat 969 (1047 A.D.4); he respectfully refers to Anantavirya in the introductory part of his work5.
(9) Abhayacandrasuri in the commentary known as Syādvādabhuṣaṇa on Laghiyastraya refers to Anantavirya with the adjective "Jinendra"; he had written this vṛtti after going through the Nyayakumudacandra of Prabhācandra, as is clear from his references such as "Akalanka prabhāvyaktam" etc. His date according to Pt. Nathūrāma Premi's calculation, lies at the beginning of the thirteen century. He is later than Prabhācandra (11th c. A.D.).
(10) Sāyaṇa Madhavacārya, the author of Sarvadarśana Samgraha, in his examination of Saptabhangi in the section dealing with Arhata-Darśana, refers to Anantavirya in these words: 'tatsarvamanantaviryaḥ pratyapipadat”. Further he writes "tadvidhānavivakṣāyāṁ Syādastīti gatirbhavet, Syannāstīti prayogah syattannişedhe vivakṣite"; etc. but these verses are not found in SVT; nor do we find any discussion of the Saptabhangi; it can be said that Sāyaṇamādhavācārya is quoting from some work of Anantavirya which does not bear any relation whatsoever with the present work (SVT); so
