પ્રવેશ
આપતાં “Archaeological research a Jain duty” નામના લેખમાં જે લખ્યું છે તે અહીં આપીને મારું વિવેચન ચાલુ કરીશ.
“ The field for exploration is vast. At the present day the adherents of the Jain religion are mostly to be found in Rajputana and Western India. But it was not always so. In olden days the creed of Mahavira was far more widely diffused than it is now. * * * I feel certain that Jain stupas must be still in existance and that they will be found if looked for. They are more likely to be found in Rajputana then elsewhere."
' અર્થા––શોધખોળનું ક્ષેત્ર બહુ જ વિશાળ છે. આજકાલ જૈનધર્મ પાળનારા વિશેષ કરીને રાજપૂતાના અને પશ્ચિમ ભારતમાં જ મળે છે. પણ હમેશાં એમ નહતું. પ્રાચીન સમયમાં આ મહાવીર ભગવાનને ધર્મ આજકાલની અપેક્ષાએ ખૂબ અધિક ફેલાયેલું હતું. ૪ ૪૪ મને નિશ્ચય છે કે જૈન સ્તૂપે (જૈનમંદિરે તે ખૂબ મળી આવે છે પણ જૈન સ્તૂપ જે બહુ ઓછા પ્રમાણમાં મળે છે તે પણ)
* ભ. મહાવીર કે બીજા તીર્થકરોના ભસ્માવશેષો ઉપર ઘુમ્મટ જેવું બાંધકામ કરેલું હોય છે તેને “તૂપ” કહે છે. આવા બે જૈન સ્તૂપો મળી આવેલા છે. એક મથુરામાં અને આજે રામગઢમાં.
