EDITORIAL
OVAIYAM
The text of Aupapātika sutra has been constituted on the basis of the manuscripts and the vrati. The references to different ancient versions in this sūtra are in abundance. It is a repository of descriptions. That is why we find at various places the instruction-jaha ovaväte (as in Ovaváia), referring to similar describers of the other agamas Neither the commentaries of those agamas nor their authentic texts of the latter contain the describers accepted in the Aupopatika. Those describers, however, are available in other versions. It poses a problem for those who study the describers.
The text of this Agama must be determined not only on the basis of adarsas and vriti but also on the basis of the describers available in the agamic commentaries and the texts of the other agamas. But it is difficult to do so without the compilation of the totality of describers.
Some of the describers are as follows:
Bhagavai :
7/175 evam jaha ovaväe jäva
7/176 evam jahä uvavâie, evath jaha uvavāie
7/196 jaha kupio java payacchitte
