प्रयम उद्देशक] [153 दोषों की सम्भावना प्रायः नहीं रहती है / क्योंकि वहां तो अन्य साधुओं का जाना-पाना बना रहता है एवं कोई आवाज होने पर भी सुनी जा सकती है। साधुओं की संख्या अधिक हो और मकान छोटा हो अथवा उपाश्रय में अस्वाध्याय का कोई कारण हो जाए तो रात्रि में स्वाध्याय के लिये अन्यत्र गमनागमन किया जाता है, अन्यथा रात्रि में ईर्या का काल न होने से गमनागमन करने का निषेध ही है। उपाश्रय की याचना करते समय ही उसके मल-मूत्र त्यागने की भूमि से सम्पन्न होने का अवश्य ध्यान रखना चाहिए, ऐसा आचा. श्र. 2, अ. 2, उ. 2. में तथा दशव. अ.८, गा. 52 में विधान है। मल-मूत्र आदि शरीर के स्वाभाविक वेगों को रोका नहीं जा सकता है इसलिए रात्रि में भी किसी साधु को बाहर जाना पड़ता है / भाष्यकार ने बताया है कि यदि साधु भयभीत होने वाला न हो एवं उपर्युक्त दोषों की सम्भावना न हो तो साथ के साधुओं को सूचित करके सावधानी रखते हुए अकेला भी जा सकता है। दो साधु हैं और एक बीमार है अथवा तीन साधु हैं, एक बीमार है और एक को उसकी सेवा में बैठना आवश्यक है तो उसे सूचित करके सावधानी रखते हुए अकेला भी जा सकता है। अनेक कारणों से अथवा अभिग्रह, पडिमा आदि धारण करने से एकाकी विचरण करने वाले भी कभी रात्रि में बाहर जाना आवश्यक हो तो सावधानी रखकर जा सकते हैं। किन्तु उत्सर्गविधि से सूत्र में कहे अनुसार एक या दो साधुओं को साथ में लेकर ही जाना चाहिए / एक से अधिक साधुओं को साथ ले जाने का कारण यह है कि कहीं अत्यधिक भयजनक स्थान होते हैं। साध्वी को तो दिन में भी गोचरी आदि कहीं भी अकेले जाने का निषेध ही है। अत: रात्रि में तो इसका ध्यान रखना अधिक आवश्यक है। दो से अधिक साध्वियों के जाने का अर्थात् तीन या चार के जाने का कारण केवल भयजनक स्थिति या भयभीत होने की प्रकृति ही समझना चाहिये। शेष विवेचन भिक्षु सम्बन्धी विवेचन के समान ही समझना चाहिए। किन्तु साध्वियों को किसी प्रकार के अपवाद में भी अकेले जाना उचित नहीं है, अतः कोई विशेष परिस्थिति हो तो श्राविका या श्रावक को साथ में लेकर जाना ही श्रेयस्कर होता है। अन्य किसी विशेष परिस्थिति में साधु-साध्वी उच्चारमात्रक में मलविसर्जन कर प्रातःकाल भी परठ सकते हैं एवं यथायोग्य प्रायश्चित्त ग्रहण कर सकते हैं। आर्यक्षेत्र में विचरण करने का विधान 48. कप्पइ निग्गंथाण वा निग्गथीण वा-पुरस्थिमेणं जाव अंगमगहाओ एत्तए, दक्खिणेणं जाव कोसम्बीनो एत्तए, पच्चत्थिमेणं जाव थूणाविसयाओ एत्तए, उत्तरेणं जाव कुणालाविसयाओ एत्तए। एयावयाव कप्पइ, एयावयाव पारिए खेत्ते / नो से कप्पइ एतो बहि, तेण परं जत्य नाण-दसण-चरित्ताई उस्सप्पन्ति / त्ति बेमि। 48. निर्ग्रन्थों को और निर्ग्रन्थियों को पूर्व दिशा में अंग-मगध तक, दक्षिण दिशा में कोशाम्बी तक, पश्चिम दिशा में स्थूणा देश तक और उत्तर दिशा में कुणाल देश तक जाना कल्पता है / इतना ही प्रार्यक्षेत्र है। इससे बाहर जाना नहीं कल्पता है। तदुपरान्त जहां ज्ञान, दर्शन एवं चारित्र की वृद्धि होती हो वहां विचरण करे /
