समुद्रों के उदकों का आस्वाद] गौतम ! जैसे पत्रासव, त्वचासव, खजूर का सार, भली-भांति पकाया हुआ इक्षुरस होता है तथा मेरक-कापिशायन-चन्द्रप्रभा-मनः शिला-वरसीधु-वरवारुणी तथा आठ बार पीसने से तैयार की गई जम्बूफल-मिश्रित वरप्रसन्ना जाति की मदिराएं उत्कृष्ट नशा देने वाली होती हैं, पोठों पर लगते ही आनन्द देनेवाली, कुछ-कुछ आँखें लाल करनेवाली, शीघ्र नशा-उत्तेजना देने वाली होती हैं, जो प्रास्वाद्य, पुष्टिकारक एवं मनोज्ञ हैं, शुभ वर्णादि से युक्त हैं, उसके जैसा वह जल है। इस पर गौतम पूछते हैं कि क्या वह जल उक्त उपमाओं जैसा ही है ? इस पर भगवान् कहते हैं कि, "नहीं" यह बात ठीक नहीं है, इससे भी इष्टतर वह जल कहा गया है। भगवन् ! क्षीरोदसमुद्र का जल आस्वाद में कैसा है ? गौतम ! जैसे चातुरन्त चक्रवर्ती के लिए चतुःस्थान-परिणत गोक्षीर (गाय का दूध) जो मंदमंद अग्नि पर पकाया गया हो, आदि और अन्त में मिसरी मिला हुआ हो, जो वर्ण गंध रस और स्पर्श से श्रेष्ठ हो, ऐसे दूध के समान वह जल है। यह उपमामात्र है, वह जल इससे भी अधिक इष्टतर है। घृतोदसमुद्र के जल का आस्वाद शरदऋतु के गाय के घी के मंड (सार-थर) के समान है जो सल्लकी और कनेर के फूल जैसा वर्णवाला है, भली-भांति गरम किया हुआ है, तत्काल नितारा हुआ है तथा जो श्रेष्ठ वर्ण-गंध-रस-स्पर्श से युक्त है। यह केवल उपमामात्र है, इससे भी अधिक इष्ट घृतोदसमुद्र का जल है। भगवन् ! क्षोदोदसमुद्र का जल स्वाद में कैसा है ? गौतम ! जैसे भेरुण्ड देश में उत्पन्न जातिवंत उन्नत पौण्ड्रक जाति का ईख होता है जो पकने पर हरिताल के समान पीला हो जाता है, जिसके पर्व काले हैं, ऊपर और नीचे के भाग को छोड़कर केवल बिचले त्रिभाग को ही बलिष्ठ बैलों द्वारा चलाये गये यंत्र से रस निकाला गया हो, जो वस्त्र से छाना गया हो, जिसमें चतुर्जातक दालचीनी, इलायची, केसर, कालीमिर्च-मिलाये जाने से सुगन्धित हो, जो बहुत पथ्य, पाचक और शुभ वर्णादि से युक्त हो-ऐसे इक्षुरस जैसा वह जल है। यह उपमामात्र है, इससे भी अधिक इष्ट क्षोदोदसमुद्र का जल है। इसी प्रकार स्वयंभूरमणसमुद्र पर्यन्त शेष समुद्रों के जल का प्रास्वाद जानना चाहिए। विशेषता यह है कि वह जल वैसा ही स्वच्छ, जातिवंत और पथ्य है जैसा कि पुष्करोद का जल है। भगवन् ! कितने समुद्र प्रत्येक रस वाले कहे गये हैं ? गौतम ! चार समुद्र प्रत्येक रसवाले हैं अर्थात् वैसा रस अन्य किसी दूसरे समुद्र का नहीं है। वे हैं- लवण, वरुणोद, क्षीरोद और घृतोद / भगवन् ! कितने समुद्र प्रकृति से उदगरस वाले हैं ? गौतम ! तीन समुद्र प्रकृति से उदग रसवाले हैं अर्थात् इनका जल स्वाभाविक पानी जैसा ही है / वे है-कालोद, पुष्करोद और स्वयंभूरमण समुद्र / अायुष्मन् श्रमण ! शेष सब समुद्र प्रायः क्षोदरस (इक्षुरस) वाले कहे गये हैं।

This is just a simile, the water of the Kshodoadasamudra is even more desirable than this. In the same way, one should know the taste of the water of the remaining oceans up to the Swayambhuramanasamudra. Three oceans are naturally of Udgarasa, i.e. their water is like natural water / They are - Kalod, Pushkarod and Swayambhuraman oceans / Ayushman Shraman! The rest of the oceans are mostly said to be of Kshodarasa (sugarcane juice).
