[५७ नौ ब्रह्मचर्यगुप्तियाँ -
- ब्रह्मचर्य शरीर की शक्ति है । जीवन का परमोत्तम धन है । मन का मर्दन है । आत्मा का उत्थान है। व्रतों में उत्तम है । साधना की बुनियाद और धर्माराधना का आधार है । सफलता का साधन और शांति का स्रोत है । क्षमा का सागर और विनय का आगार है। सूत्रकृतांग सूत्र के छठे अध्ययन में लिखा है - 'तवेसु वा उत्तम बंभचेरं' अर्थात् ब्रह्मचर्य तपों में श्रेष्ठ है। ब्रह्मचर्य का अर्थ -
जीवो बंभो जीवम्मि चेव चरिया, हविज जा जदिणो ? तं जाणं बंभचेरं, विमुक्क परदेहतित्तिस्स॥
- भगवती आराधना ८१ अर्थात् - ब्रह्म अर्थात् आत्मा, आत्मा में चर्या अर्थात् रमण करना ब्रह्मचर्य है।
ब्रह्मचर्य धर्मसाधना का आधार है। इसकी साधना से आत्मकल्याण का मार्ग प्रशस्त होता है। प्रश्नव्याकरणसूत्र में कहा है - ब्रह्मचर्य धर्मरूपी पद्मसरोवर की पाल है। वह दया क्षमादि गुणों का आगार है एवं धर्मशाखाओं का आधार है । ब्रह्मचारी की देव-नरेन्द्र पूजा करते हैं । यह संसार का मंगलमय मार्ग है।
देव-दाणव-गंधव्वा जक्ख-रक्खस-किन्नरा। बंभयारिं नमसंति दुक्करं जे करंति ते॥
- उत्तराध्ययनसूत्र अर्थात् - देव, दानव, गंधर्व, यक्ष, राक्षस तथा किन्नर आदि देवगण भी दुष्कर ब्रह्मचर्य का पालन करने वाले ब्रह्मचारी को नमस्कार करते हैं।
अमेरिकन ऋषि 'थोरो' ने कहा है - "ब्रह्मचर्य जीवन-वृक्ष का पुष्प है और प्रतिभा, पवित्रता, वीरता आदि अनेक उसके मनोहर फल हैं।" व्यास के शब्दों में - "ब्रह्मचर्य अमृत है।" जो मनुष्य ब्रह्मचर्य रूपी अमृत का आस्वादन कर लेता है, वह सदा के लिये अमर बन जाता है । ब्रह्मचर्य जीवन की विराट साधना
है।
यदि साधना करते हुए कहीं भी प्रमादवश नौ ब्रह्मचर्यगुप्तियों का अतिक्रमण किया हो तो उसका प्रस्तुत सूत्र के द्वारा प्रतिक्रमण किया जाता है।

The sixth study of the Sutra Kritanga Sutra states - 'Tavesu Va Uttama Bhamchearam' meaning Brahmacharya is the best among austerities. The meaning of Brahmacharya -

Jivo Bhamho Jivammi Chev Chariya, Havij Ja Jadino? Tam Janam Bhamchearam, Vimuk Pardehatittiss.
- Bhagavati Aradhana 81 meaning - Brahma means the soul, to dwell in the soul is Brahmacharya.

Brahmacharya is the foundation of Dharma sadhana. Through its practice, the path to self-salvation is paved. The Prashnavyakaran Sutra states - Brahmacharya is the embankment of the lotus pond of Dharma. It is the storehouse of qualities like compassion, forgiveness, etc. and the basis of the branches of Dharma. Devotees and kings worship the Brahmachari. It is the auspicious path of the world.

Dev-Danav-Gandhavva Jakkha-Rakkhas-Kinnara. Bhamhyarim Namsanti Dukkaram Je Karanti Te.
- Uttaraadhyayanasutra meaning - Even gods like Dev, Danav, Gandharva, Yaksha, Rakshasa, and Kinnara bow down to the Brahmachari who practices the difficult Brahmacharya.

The American sage 'Thoro' said - "Brahmacharya is the flower of the tree of life and its beautiful fruits are many, including brilliance, purity, courage, etc." In the words of Vyasa - "Brahmacharya is nectar." The person who enjoys the nectar of Brahmacharya becomes immortal forever. Brahmacharya is the great sadhana of life.

If, while practicing sadhana, one inadvertently transgresses the nine Brahmacharya secrets, then pratikraman is performed through this sutra.
