First Prabhrita
[First Prabhrita Prabhrita] Vīratthuī
Hail the new lotus-lake, the destroyer of the multitude of enemies' pride!
The hero, the source of auspiciousness, the embodiment of the power of the ocean-like knowledge ॥1॥
Obeisance to the five-fold reverence, the exposition of the doctrine of Jyotiṣkaraṇa-rāja,
Saluting the one adored by the Asuras, Devas, Garuḍas, and Bhujañgas, who has conquered the defilements ॥2॥
Expounding the essence of the previous scriptures, the subtle doctrine comprehended by the ascetics,
The doctrine of Jyotiṣkaraṇa-rāja ॥3॥
Venerating Gautama, known as 'Indrabhaṭi', he inquires of the Jina-lord the doctrine of Jyotiṣkarāja ॥4॥
1-2. At that time, there was a city named 'Mithilā', as described.
Outside of this Mithilā city, in the north-western direction, there was a temple named 'Māṇibhadra', as described.
In this Mithilā, King 'Jitaśatru' resided, as described. His queen was named 'Dhāriṇī', as described.
At that time, in that Māṇibhadra temple, the lord (Tīrthaṅkara) manifested, as described. [a] The assembly departed, the doctrine was expounded. [b] The assembly returned. [c] The king went in the same direction as he had come.
At that time, the senior disciple of the Blessed Lord Mahāvīra, the ascetic named 'Indrabhaṭi', while residing in the posture of salutation, spoke thus -
