द्वादश उपांगों के वर्तमान मान्य क्रम में चन्द्रप्रज्ञप्ति छठा और सूर्यप्रज्ञप्ति सातवां उपांग है - इसलिये आचार्य मलयगिरि ने पहले चन्द्रप्रज्ञप्ति की वृत्ति और बाद में सूर्यप्रज्ञप्ति की वृत्ति रची होगी।
यदि आचार्य मलयगिरिकृत चन्द्रप्रज्ञप्ति-वृत्ति कहीं से उपलब्ध है तो उसका प्रकाशन हुआ है या नहीं ? या अन्य किसी के द्वारा की गई नियुक्ति, चूर्णि या टीका प्रकाशित हो तो अन्वेषणीय है।
आचार्य मलयगिरि ने सूर्यप्रज्ञप्ति की वृत्ति में लिखा है - सूर्यप्रज्ञप्तिनियुक्ति नष्ट हो गई है। अतः गुरु कृपा से वृत्ति की रचना कर रहा हूँ। नामकरण और विभाजन
सभी अंग-उपांगों के आदि या अन्त में कहीं न कहीं उनके नाम उपलब्ध हैं किन्तु इन दोनों उपांगों की उत्थानिका या उपसंहार में चन्द्रप्रज्ञप्ति या सूर्यप्रज्ञप्ति का नाम क्यों नहीं है ? यह एक विचारणीय प्रश्न है।
दो उपांगों के रूप में इनका विभाजन कब और क्यों हुआ ? यह शोध का विषय है। ग्रह, नक्षत्र, तारा ज्योतिष्क देव हैं - इनके इन्द्र हैं चन्द्र-सूर्य - ये दोनों ज्योतिषगणराज है।
उत्थानिका और उपसंहार के गद्य-पद्य सूत्रों में ज्योतिषगणराजप्रज्ञप्ति' नाम ही उपलब्ध है किन्तु इस नाम से ये उपांग प्रख्यात न होकर चन्द्रप्रज्ञप्ति और सूर्यप्रज्ञप्ति नाम से प्रख्यात हुए हैं।
'ज्योतिष-राज-प्रज्ञप्ति' का संकलनकर्त्ता ग्रन्थ के प्रारम्भ में ज्योतिष-गण-राज-प्रज्ञप्ति' इस एक नाम से की गई स्वतंत्र संकलित वृत्ति को ही कहने की प्रतिज्ञा करता है।
इसका असंदिग्ध आधार चन्द्रप्रज्ञप्ति के प्रारम्भ में दी हुई तृतीय और चतुर्थ गाथा है।
