'पुरिस त्ति, संकु, पुरिस सरीरं वा, ततो पुरिसे निप्फन्ना पोरिसी, एवं सव्वस्सं वत्थुणो यदा स्वप्रमाणा छाया भवति, तदा हवइ,

'A *purisa* (man), a *sanku* (rod), a *purisa-sarira* (human body), from that *purisa*, a *porisi* is born, in this way, when the shadow of any object is equal to its own measure, then it is called,

This measure of *porisi* is for one day at the end of *uttarayana* (northern solstice), at the beginning of *dakshinayana* (southern solstice), after that, in *dakshinayana*, it increases by 1/61 part of an *angula* (finger), in *uttarayana*, it decreases, in this way, there are other *porisi* in the *mandala* (circle).
