[अन्तकृद्दशा वर्णन औपपातिकसूत्र में है।
'जहा उदायणे तहा निक्खंते' का अर्थ है-जिस प्रकार महाराजा उदायन ने दीक्षा ग्रहण की थी, उसी प्रकार अलक्ष नरेश भी दीक्षित हुए।
उदायन राजा का वर्णन भगवतीसूत्र के शतक १३ उ. ६ में आया है। उसके अनुसार उदायन सिन्धु-सौवीर आदि सोलह देशों का स्वामी था।
एक दिन वह पौषधशाला में पौषध करके बैठा हुआ था। धर्म-जागरण करते हुए उसे भगवान् महावीर की स्मृति आ गई। वह सोचने लगा- वह नगर, कानन धन्य हैं जहां भगवान् विहार करते हैं। वे राजा आदि धन्य हैं जो भगवान् की वाणी सुनते हैं, उनकी उपासना करते हैं, अपने हाथ से उन्हें निर्दोष भोजन, वस्त्र, पात्र आदि देते हैं। मेरा ऐसा सौभाग्य कहां? मुझे तो उन महाप्रभु के दर्शन करने का भी अवसर नहीं मिलता। चिन्तन की धारा ऊर्ध्वमुखी होने लगी। उसने सोचा-यदि भगवान् मेरी नगरी में पधार जाएं तो मैं उनकी सेवा करूं और साथ ही इस असार संसार को छोड़कर दीक्षित हो जाऊं।
उस समय भगवान् चम्पा के पूर्णभद्र उद्यान में विराजमान थे। वीतभयपुर और चम्पा में सात सौ कोस का अन्तर था, पर करुणासागर भक्तवत्सल भगवान् महावीर ने अपने भक्त की कामना पूर्ण करने के लिए चम्पा से प्रस्थान कर दिया और धीरे-धीरे यात्रा करते हुए वे उदायन की नगरी में पधारे गये। भगवान् के पधारने के शुभ समाचार पाकर उदायन आनंद-विभोर हो उठे। बड़े समारोह के साथ राजा, रानी और कुमार सब भगवान् के चरणों में उपस्थित हुए। धर्म-कथा सुनी, भगवान् की कल्याण-कारिणी वाणी सुनकर उदायन को वैराग्य हो गया। अपना उत्तराधिकारी निश्चित करने के लिए वह वापस महलों में आया। शासन का सारा दायित्व अभीच कुमार को संभला देना चाहिये था, पर उदायन ने सोचा-राज्य को बंधन का कारण समझा कर मैं त्याग रहा हूं, फिर अपने पुत्र अभीच कुमार को इस बंधन में क्यों फंसाऊं अपना बंधन कुमार के गले में डालूं यह तो उसके साथ अन्याय होगा। अन्त में राजा ने सारे राज्य में घ कर दी कि-मेरा उत्तराधिकारी मेरा भागिनेय केशी कुमार है, उसका राज्याभिषेक करके मैं दीक्षित हो जाऊंगा। इस घोषणा से उत्तराधिकारी राजकुमार को महान् दुःख हुआ और वह रुष्ट होकर अपने राज्य से बाहर चला गया। इधर, उदायन भानजे को राजा बनाकर दीक्षित हो गये।
एक बार मुनि उदायन अस्वस्थ हो गये। वे भ्रमण करते हुए अपनी नगरी वीतभयपुर में आए पर केशीकुमार बदल चुका था। उसको भय हो गया कि कहीं उदायन पुनः राज्य न लेना चाहते हों! अत: उसने नगर में सबको आदेश दे दिया कि - कोई व्यक्ति उदायन को आहार न दे और न विश्राम करने का
। इस आदेश की अवहेलना करेगा उसे राजा परिवार सहित मौत के घाट उतार देगा।' मृत्यु के भय से किसी भी नागरिक ने उन्हें आश्रय नहीं दिया। उदायन सारे नगर में घूमे, तब कहीं एक कुम्हार को दया आ गई। उसने उन्हें स्थान दिया। अपने गुप्तचरों से यह सूचना पाकर राजा ने उदायन को मरवाने के लिए एक वैद्य को भेजा। वैद्य ने उपचार के निमित्त उदायन को विष खिला दिया। शरीर में अपार वेदना हुई पर उदायन मुनि ने विष-वेदना को शांतिपूर्वक सहन किया। भावना की निर्विकारता से उदायन मुनि को अवधिज्ञान हो गया। ज्ञान-प्रकाश होते ही स्थिति समझने में देर न लगी, पर उन्होंने अपने मन को विक्षुब्ध नहीं होने दिया। धर्मध्यान और शुक्लध्यान की सीढ़िया पार करके अन्त में केवलज्ञान प्राप्त किया और मुक्त हो गए।
