प्रकट होता है कि कुम्हारों की कर्मशालाएँ व अलाव नगरों से बाहर होते थे, जिससे अलावों से उठने वाले धुंए के कारण वायु-दूषण न हो, नगरवासियों को असुविधा न हो। फिर सकडालपुत्र के तो पांच सौ कर्मशालाएँ थीं, बर्तन पकाने में बहुत धुंआ उठता था, इसलिए निर्माण का सारा कार्य नगर के बाहर होता था । बिक्री का कार्य सड़कों व चौराहों पर किया जाता था। आज भी प्रायः ऐसा ही है । कुम्हारों के घर शहरों तथा गाँवों के एक किनारे होते हैं, जहाँ वे अपने बर्तन बनाते हैं, पकाते हैं। बर्तन बेचने का काम आज भी सड़कों और चौराहों पर देखा जाता है ।

१८५. तए णं से सद्दालपुत्ते आजीविओवासए अन्नया कयाइ पुव्वावरण्ह-कालसमयंसि जेणेव असोग- वणिया, तेणेव उवागच्छइ, उवागच्छित्ता गोसालस्स मंखलि पुत्तस्स अंतियं धम्मपण्णत्तिं उवसपज्जित्ताणं विहरइ ।
एक दिन आजीविकोपासक सकडालपुत्र दोपहर के समय अशोकवाटिका में गया, मंखलिपुत्र गोशाला के पास अंगीकृत धर्म-प्रज्ञप्ति - धर्म - शिक्षा के अनुरूप वहां उपासनारत हुआ ।
१८६. तए णं तस्स सद्दालपुत्तस्स आजीविओवासगस्स एगे देवे अंतियं पाउब्भवित्था । आजीविकोपासक सकडालपुत्र के समक्ष एक देव प्रकट हुआ ।
१८७. तणं से देवे अंतलिक्ख पडिवन्ने सखिखिणियाइं जाव (पंचवण्णाई वत्थाइं पवर) परिहिए सद्दालपुत्तं आजीविओवासयं एवं वयासी- एहिइ णं देवाणुप्पिया ! कल्लं इहं महामाहणे, उप्पन्नणाण- दंसणधरे, तीय- पडुप्पन्न - मणागय- जाणए, अरहा, जिणे, केवली, सव्वणू, सव्वदरिसी तेलोक्क- वहिय- महिय - पूइए, सदेवमणुयासुरस्स लोगस्स अच्चणिजे, वंदणिज्जे नम॑सणिज्जे जाव (सक्कारणिज्जे, सम्माणणिज्जे कल्लाणं, मंगलं, देवयं, चेइयं ) पज्जुवासणिज्जे, तच्च-कम्म- संपया - संपउत्ते । तं णं तुमं वंदेज्जाहि, जाव ( णमंसेज्जाहि, सक्कारज्जाहि, सम्माणेज्जाहि, कल्लाणं, मंगलं, देवयं, चेइयं ) पज्जुवासेज्जाहि, पाडिहारिएणं पीढ-फलग-सिज्जा-संथारएणं उवनिमंतेज्जाहि । दोच्चं पि तच्चं पि एवं वयइ, वइत्ता जामेव दिसं पाउब्भूए तामेव दिसं पडिगए ।
छोटी-छोटी घंटियों से युक्त पांच वर्ण के उत्तम वस्त्र पहने हुए आकाश में अवस्थित उस देव आजीविकोपासक सकडालपुत्र से कहा--देवानुप्रिय ! कल प्रात:काल यहां महामाहन-महान् अहिंसक, अप्रतिहत ज्ञान, दर्शन के धारक, अतीत, वर्तमान एवं भविष्य-- तीनों काल के ज्ञाता, अर्हत्-परम पूज्य, परम समर्थ, जिन-राग-द्वेष-विजेता, केवली - परिपूर्ण, शुद्ध एवं अनन्त ज्ञान आदि से युक्त, सर्वज्ञ, सर्वदर्शी, तीनों लोक अत्यन्त हर्षपूर्वक जिनके दर्शन की उत्सुकता लिए रहते हैं, जिनकी सेवा एवं उपासना की वांछा लिए रहते हैं, देव, मनुष्य तथा असुर सभी द्वारा अर्चनीय-अर्चायोग्ग्र-पूजायोग्य, वन्दनीय-स्तवनयोग्य, नमस्करणीय, ( सत्करणीय - सत्कार या आदर करने योग्य, सम्माननीय - सम्मान
