गोशालक द्वारा दिखाए गए आदर-भाव के कारण शिष्टतावश अनुरोध किया-आप मेरी कर्मशाला में रूकें, आवश्यक वस्तुएं लें। गोशालक तो बस यही चाहता था। उसने झट स्वीकार कर लिया और वहां गया। वहां के प्रवास के बीच उसको सकडालपुत्र के साथ तात्त्विक वार्तालाप करने का अनेक बार अवसर मिला। वहां के प्रवास के बीच उसको सकडालपुत्र के साथ तात्त्विक वार्तालाप करने का अनेक बार अवसर मिला। उसने सकडालपुत्र को बदलने का बहुत प्रयास किया, पर वह सर्वथा विफल रहा। सकडालपुत्र तो खूब विवेक और समझदारी के साथ यथार्थ तत्त्व प्राप्त कर चुका था, वह विचलित कैसे होता? निराश होकर गोशालक वहां से विहार कर गया। सकडालपुत्र पूर्ववत् अपने सांसारिक उत्तरदायित्व के निर्वाह के साथ-साथ धर्मोपासना में लगा रहा।
यों चौदह वर्ष व्यतीत हो गए। पन्द्रहवां वर्ष आधा बीत चुका था। एक बार आधी रात के समय सकडालपत्र अपनी धर्माराधना में निरत था. एक मिथ्यात्वी देव उसे व्रत-च्यत करने के लिए आया, व्रत छोड़ देने के लिए उसके पुत्रों को मार डालने की धमकी दी। सकडालपुत्र अविचल रहा तब उसने उसीके सामने क्रमश: उसके तीनों बेटों को मार-मार कर प्रत्येक के नौ-नौ मांस-खंड किए, उबलते पानी से भरी कढ़ाही में खौलाया और उनका मांस व रक्त उसके शरीर पर छींटा। पर, सकडालपुत्र आत्म-बल और धैर्य के साथ वह सब सह गया, उसकी आस्था नहीं डगमगाई।
फिर भी देव निराश नहीं हुआ। उसने सोचा कि सकडालपुत्र के जीवन में अग्निमित्रा का बहुत बड़ा महत्त्व है, वह केवल पतिपरायणा पत्नी ही नहीं है, सुख दुःख में सहयोगिनी है और सबसे बड़ी बात यह है कि वह उसके धार्मिक जीवन की अनन्य सहायिका है । यह सोचकर उसने सकडालपुत्र के समक्ष उसकी पत्नी अग्निमित्रा को मार डालने और वैसी दुर्दशा करने की धमकी दी। जो सकडोलपुत्र तीनों बेटों की हत्या अपनी आंखों के आगे देख अविचलित रहा, वह इस धमकी से क्षुभित हो गया। उसमें क्रोध जागा और उसने सोचा, इस दष्ट को मुझे पकड़ लेना चाहिए। वह झट पकड़ने के लिए उठा, पर देव-षड्यन्त्र में कौन किसे पकड़ता? देव लुप्त हो गया। सकडालपुत्र के हाथों के सामने का खम्भा आया। यह सब अनहोनी घटनाएं देख सकडालपुत्र घबरा गया और उसने जोर से कोलाहल किया। अग्निमित्रा ने जब यह सुना तो तत्क्षण वहां आई, पति की सारी बात सुनी और बोली-परीक्षा की
अन्तिम चोट में आप हार गए। वह मिथ्यादृष्टि देव आखिर आपका व्रत भंग करने में सफल हो गया। इस भूल के लिए आप प्रायश्चित्त कीजिए। सकडालपुत्र ने वैसा ही किया।
सकडालपुत्र का अन्तिम जीवन भी बहुत ही प्रशस्त रहा। उसने एक मास की अन्तिम संलेखना और अनशन के साथ समाधि-मरण प्राप्त किया। देहत्याग कर वह अरूणभूत विमान में चार पल्योपमस्थितिक देव हुआ।

Sakdalputra remained steadfast, then he killed his three sons one after the other in front of him, cutting each into nine pieces of flesh, boiled them in a cauldron filled with boiling water, and splattered their flesh and blood on his body. But Sakdalputra endured it all with self-strength and patience, his faith did not waver.
Still, the deity was not discouraged. He thought that Agni Mitra was of great importance in Sakdalputra's life, she was not only a devoted wife, but also a companion in happiness and sorrow, and most importantly, she was the sole helper of his religious life. Thinking this, he threatened to kill Sakdalputra's wife Agni Mitra in front of him and inflict the same fate on her. Seeing all these unnatural events, Sakdalputra was frightened and made a loud noise. When Agni Mitra heard this, she immediately came there, listened to her husband's entire story and said, "You have lost in the final test. That false-sighted deity has finally succeeded in breaking your vow. Do penance for this mistake." Sakdalputra did the same.
Sakdalputra's final life was also very prosperous. He attained samadhi-death with a month-long final sanlekhana and fasting. After giving up his body, he became a four-pal-upamasthitika deva in the Arunabhoot Vimana.
