शतक्रतु-ऋतु का अर्थ यज्ञ है। सौ यज्ञ सम्पूर्ण रूप में सम्पन्न कर लेने पर इन्द्र-पद प्राप्त होता है, वैदिक परम्परा में ऐसी मान्यता है। अतः शतक्रतु सौ यज्ञ पूरे कर इन्द्र पद पाने के अर्थ में प्रचलित
सहस्त्रांक्ष--इसका शाब्दिक अर्थ हजार नेत्रवाला है। इन्द्र का यह नाम पड़ने के पीछे एक पौराणिक कथा बहुत प्रसिद्ध है। ब्रह्मवैवर्त पुराण में उल्लेख है-इन्द्र एक बार मन्दाकिनी के तट पर स्नान करने गया। वहाँ उसने गौतम ऋषि की पत्नी अहल्या को नहाते देखा। इन्द्र की बुद्धि कामावेश से भ्रष्ट हो गई। उसने देव-माया से गौतम ऋषि का रूप बना लिया और अहल्या का शील-भंग किया। इसी बीच गौतम वहाँ पहुंच गए। वे इन्द्र पर अत्यन्त क्रुद्ध हुए, उसे फटकारते हुए कहने लगे-तुम तो देवताओं में श्रेष्ठ समझे जाते हो, ज्ञानी कहे जाते हो। पर, वास्तव में तुम नीच, अधम, पतित और पापी हो, योनिलम्पट हो। इन्द्र की निन्दनीय योनि-लम्पटता जगत् के समक्ष प्रकट रहे, इसलिए गौतम ने उसकी देह पर सहस्त्र योनियां बन जाने का शाप दे डाला। तत्काल इन्द्र की देह पर हजार योनियां उद्भूत हो गई। इन्द्र घबरा गया, ऋषि के चरणों में गिर पड़ा। बहुत अनुनय-विनय करने पर ऋषि ने इन्द्र से कहा-पूरे एक वर्ष तक तुम्हें इस घृणित रूप का कष्ट झेलना ही होगा। तुम प्रतिक्षण योनि की दुर्गन्ध में रहोगे। तदनन्तर सूर्य की आराधना से ये सहस्त्र योनियां नेत्र रूप में परिणत हो जायेंगी-तुम सहस्त्राक्ष-हजार नेत्रों वाले बन जाओगे। आगे चल कर वैसा ही हुआ, एक वर्ष तक वैसा जघन्य जीवन बिताने के बाद इन्द्र सूर्य की आराधना से सहस्त्राक्ष बन गया।
११२. तए णं से कामदेवे समणोवासए निरूवसग्गं इइ कट्टु पडिमं पारेइ।
तब श्रमणोपासक कामदेव ने यह जानकर कि अब उपसर्ग-विघ्न नहीं रहा है, अपनी प्रतिमा का पारण--समापन किया। भगवान् महावीर का पदार्पण : कामदेव द्वारा वन्दन-नमन
११३. तेणं कालेणं तेणं समएणं समणे भगवं महावीरे जाव (जेणेव चंपा नयरी, जेणेव पुण्णभद्दे चेइए, तेणेव उवागच्छइ, उवागच्छित्ता अहापडिरूवं ओग्गहं ओगिण्हित्ता संजमेणं तवसा अप्पाणं भावेमाणे) विहरइ।
