रुष्ट, कुपित तथा विकराल होता हुआ, मिसमिसाहट करता हुआ -- तेज सांस छोड़ता हुआ, श्रमणोपासक कामदेव से बोला -- अप्रार्थित -- जिसे कोई नहीं चाहता, उस मृत्यु को चाहने वाले ! दुःखद अन्त तथा अशुभ लक्षणवाले, पुण्यचतुर्दशी जिस दिन हीन - असम्पूर्ण थी -- घटिकाओं में अमावस्या आ गई थी, उस अशुभ दिन में जन्मे हुए अभागे ! लज्जा, शोभा, धृति तथा कीर्ति से परिवर्जित ! धर्म, पुण्य, स्वर्ग और मोक्ष की कामना, इच्छा एवं पिपासा -- उत्कण्ठा रखने वाले ! देवानुप्रिय ! शील, व्रत, विरमण, प्रत्याख्यान तथा पोषधोपवास से विचलित होना, विक्षुभित होना, उन्हें खण्डित करना, भग्न करना, 'उज्झित करना--उनका त्याग करना, परित्याग करना तुम्हें नहीं कल्पता है -- इनका पालन करने में तुम कृतप्रतिज्ञ हो । पर, यदि तुम आज शील, ( व्रत, विरमण, प्रत्याख्यान ) एवं पोषधोपवास का त्याग नहीं करोगे, उन्हें नहीं तोड़ोगे तो मैं (नीले कमल, भैंसे के सींग तथा अलसी के फूल के समान गहरी नीली, तेज धारवाली) इस तलवार से तुम्हारे टुकड़े-टुकड़े कर दूंगा, जिससे हे देवानुप्रिय ! तुम आर्तध्यान एवं विकट दुःख से पीडित होकर असमय में ही जीवन से पृथक् हो जाओगे -- प्राणों से हाथ बैठोंगे।
९६. तए णं से कामदेवे समणोवासए तेणं देवेणं पिसाय-रूवेणं एवं वुत्ते समाणे, अभीए, अंतत्थे, अणुव्विग्गे, अक्खुभिए, अचलिए, असंभंते, तुसिणीए धम्म - ज्झाणोवगए विहरइ । उस पिशाच द्वारा यों कहे जाने पर भी श्रमणोपासक कामदेव भीत, त्रस्त, उद्विग्न, क्षुभित एवं विचलित नहीं हुआ; घबराया नहीं। वह चुपचाप -- शान्त भाव से धर्म - ध्यान में स्थित रहा ।
९७. तए णं से देवे पिसाय-रूवे कामदेवं समणोवासयं अभीयं, जाव (अतत्थं, अणुव्विगं, अखुभियं, अचलियं, असंभंतं, तुसिणीयं ), धम्म- ज्झाणोवगयं विहरमाणं पासइ, पासित्ता दोच्चंपि तच्छं पि कामदेवं एवं वयासी --हं भो ! कामदेवा! समणोवासया ! अपत्थियपत्थिया ! जइ णं तुमं अज्ज जाव (सीलाई, वयाइं, वेरमणाई, पच्चक्खाणाई, पोसहवासाइं न छड्डेसि, न भंजेसि, तो ते अहं अज्ज इमेणं नीलुप्पल - गवल - गुलियअयसि - कुसुम-प्पगासेण खुरधारेण असिणा खंडाखंडिं करेमि जहा णं तुमं देवाणुप्पिया ! अट्ट-दुहट्ट-वसट्टे अकाले चेव जीवियाओ ) ववरोविज्जसि ।

पिशाच का रूप धारण किये हुए देव ने श्रमणोपासक कामदेव को यों निर्भय (त्रास, उद्वेग तथा क्षोभ रहित, अविचल, अनाकुल एवं शान्त) भाव से धर्म - ध्यान में निरत देखा । तब उसने दूसरी , तीसरी बार फिर कहा--मौत को चाहने वाले श्रमणोपासक कामदेव ! आज (यदि तुम शील, व्रत, विरमण, प्रत्याख्यान तथा पोषधोपवास को नहीं छोड़ोगे, नहीं तोड़ोगे तो नीले कमल, भैंसे के सींग तथा अलसी के फूल के समान गहरी नीली तेज धार वाली इस तलवार से तुम्हारे टुकड़े-टुकड़े कर दूंगा, जिससे हे देवानुप्रिय ! तुम आर्तध्यान एवं विकट दुःख से पीड़ित होकर असमय में ही ) प्राणों से हाथ धो बैठोगे ।
