A canal was built to supply water to the new city.. Ananda Ram Mistri was commissioned to survey the neighbourhood. His report written on 16th July, 1726, is still preserved. The source selected was the Jhotawada river, four miles north-west of the new city. The device made to bring water in the city can still be traced out as the entire water route lies buried below the busy market streets of the city.
The water reservoirs were public places situated at the two chaupars, (four-sided meet) then popular as the 'Sanga neri-chaupara' and the “Amber ki cha upara”. Unlike what they look like today, formerly they were in the form of reservoirs (Kunda) with steps leading to the surface of water. Later on, when more water taps were insta lled during the reign of Sawai Ramsingh in different localities of the city these reservoirs lost their importance and were used for the “tenth day bath” after burning the dead. On this particular day, the relatives of the dead, before a bath, had to entrust their heads to the barber, whose function it was to remove all their hairs, and give the top a coconut-like apperance. These barbers used to sit under the ‘bada' tree still standing in the four corners of these chaụpars, In memory of their past headquarters, a few foot-path barbers are still seen sitting under these shady trees. During the times of Sawai Madho Singh II these water-reservoirs were converted and given the present decorum.
