According to Jainism, the world consists of two types of basic substances the soul and the non-soul. A soul bound by a body is called 'Jiva' or an embodied soul. A free or a disembodied soul is called paramatma. That which enables the transformation of a bonded soul into a perfect soul is called dharam or religion.
Non-violence, Truth, non-stealing, celibacy, non-possession are lord Mahavira's fundamental teachings. His philosophy of Anekant-many sidedness is also central to Jainism's democratic teachings.
Bhagavan Mahavira propounded the doctrine of the freedom of the soul. The soul is not a part of paramatma, God or a supreme soul, it does not dissolve into paramatma after it has become emancipated. It maintains its independent existence in the state of bondage as well as in the state of liberation.
India is a land of saints and sages, seers and prophets, thinkers and philosophers. In all historical epochs, she produced a long line of spiritual luminaries who benefited human kind (both by practice and precept) with the highest moral and spiritual values of life. They presented a path leading from darkness to light, from ignorance to knowledge, from cruelty, encmity and hatred to kindness, love and compassion. The renowned Lord Mahavira was one of the brightest among such spiritual luminaries in the history of the mankind. He practised what he preached, and preached what he practised. The voice of this great spiritual apostle touched and changed the hearts of both human being and animals. His teachings were of the highest intellectual and spiritual level. His words powerfully affected that people who were astonished to hear the great gospel of life, and through it they achieved peace of mind. Lord Mahavira was the 24th tirthankar of Jainism but it is also true that he remains a light house or a beacon light for those who have lost their way and are wandering in darkness. In other words, he is a great spiritual leader of human kind and of all living beings. He himself was a great gospel of spirituality.
