In the same way, the person imbibed in empirical pleasures, who transgresses the religious laws and gives up righteousness, repents, when he is in the jaws of death like a broken axle cartman (15)
तओ से मरणन्तमि, बाले सन्तस्सई भया । अकाम-मरणं मरई, धुत्ते व कलिना जिए ॥ १६ ॥
एक ही दाँव में सब कुछ हारे हुए जुआरी के समान वह अज्ञानी जीव मृत्यु के समय परलोक के भय से संत्रस्त होकर अकाममरण से मरता है ॥ १६ ॥
पंचम अध्ययन [ ५२
Like a gambler, who has lost all in a single chance, that self-foolishman, being dreadful by the torments of next life, dies by in-voluntary-unwilling death. (16)
एयं अकाम-मरणं, बालाणं तु पवेइयं ।
तो काम-मरणं, पण्डियाणं सुणेह मे ॥१७॥
यहाँ तक तो अज्ञानी जीवों के अकाम मरण का वर्णन किया गया है। अब यहाँ से आगे पंडितों (ज्ञानी जीवों) के सकाम मरण का वर्णन मुझसे सुनो ॥ १७ ॥
Thus has been described the death of fools which is un-willing death, Now I tell about wisemen's death, hear that from me. (17)
मरणं पि सपुण्णाणं, जहा मेयमणुस्सुयं । विप्पसण्णमणाघायं, संजयाणं वसीमओ ॥१८ ॥
जैसा कि मैंने परम्परा से सुना है-संयत, जितेन्द्रिय तथा पुण्यशालियों का मरण अति प्रसन्न और आघात रहित होता है ॥ १८ ॥
As I have heard traditionally by the enlightened preceptors-the expiration of pious, meritorious, restrained persons becomes free of injuries and full of peace. (18)
न इमं सव्वेसु भिक्खूसु, न इमं सव्वेसुऽगारिसु । नाणा - सीला अगारत्था, विसम-सीला य भिक्खुणो ॥ १९ ॥
इस सकाममरण से न सभी साधु ही मृत्यु को प्राप्त होते हैं और न सभी गृहस्थ ही ; क्योंकि गृहस्थ भी भिन्न-भिन्न प्रकार के शील वाले होते हैं और बहुत से भिक्षु (साधु) भी विषम (विभिन्न) शील वाले होते हैं ॥१९॥
Such a wilful, non-injurious and peaceful death does not fall to all mendicants, nor to every householder; for the morality of householders is of various types and the mendicants are not always good-charactered throughout. (19)
सन्ति एगेहिं भिक्खुहिं, गारत्था संजमुत्तरा । गारत्थेहि य सव्वेहिं, साहवो संजमुत्तरा ॥२०॥
कुछ भिक्षुओं की अपेक्षा गृहस्थ संयम में बढ़कर होते हैं किन्तु शुद्ध आचारवान् साधु सभी गृहस्थों से संयम में श्रेष्ठ होते हैं ॥२०॥
