आदर्श गृह (शीश महल) में केवलज्ञान
एक दिन चक्रवर्ती भरत स्नान कर देव दूष्य वस्त्र-आभूषणों को धारण कर सिंहासन पर बैठे ॐ शीशे में अपना प्रतिबिम्ब निहार रहे थे। अचानक उनकी दृष्टि अपनी अंगुली पर पड़ी। अंगुली में भी अंगूठी नहीं थी। वह नीचे गिर गई थी। अंगूठी विहीन अंगुली पर ध्यान केन्द्रित हुआ, अंगूठी के बिना है ॐ अंगुली शोभाहीन लगी। भरत को एक झटका-सा लगा। चिन्तन प्रारम्भ हुआ-'क्या आभूषणों से ही 5
शरीर की शोभा है? क्या बिना आभूषणों के यह शरीर कांतीहीन लगता है? देखता हूँ।' उन्होंने अपने म सब आभूषण उतार दिये और दर्पण में निहारा-'सचमुच बाह्य आभूषणों से ही शरीर की शोभा है। ॐ मांस, रक्त, मल-मूत्र के भण्डार इस शरीर का अपना कोई सौन्दर्य नहीं है।' चिन्तन की धारा उत्तरोत्तर ॐ गहन बनती गई। भरत आत्मभाव में गहरे उतरते गये और प्रशस्त अध्यवसाय, उज्जवल, निर्मल ॐ परिणाम इतनी तीव्रता तक पहुँच गये कि कर्म बन्धन टूटने लगे। मात्र अन्तर्मुर्हत में चारों घाती कर्मों के म का नाश हुआ और भरतेश्वर के भीतर केवलज्ञान का दिव्य प्रकाश जगमगा उठा। तब भरत ने अपने है ॐ हाथों से पंच मुष्टि लोच करके देवताओं द्वारा प्रदत्त मुनि वस्त्र एवं रजोहरण धारण किया। वे अन्त:पुर म के बीच में से होते हुये राजभवन से बाहर निकले और उपवन की ओर प्रस्थान किया। उनकी : ॐ महारानियाँ, मन्त्री, सैनिक आदि ने शीश झुकाकर उन्हें प्रणाम किया।

ATTAINING OMNISCIENCE IN PALACE OF MIRRORS One day Chakravarti Bharat, after taking his bath and putting on his dress and ornaments, sat on his throne and looked at his reflection in a mirror. Suddenly he happened to look at his finger. His ring was missing. It had fallen on the ground. His attention was drawn to the finger that was deprived of its glamour in absence of the ring. Bharat got a jolt. He started thinking -- 'Is the glamour of the body only due to ornaments? Does the body appear dull without ornaments? Let me see.' He discarded all his ornaments and looked at the mirror. 'Indeed, body looks beautiful only when embellished with ornaments. This human body, the storehouse of flesh, blood and excreta, has no beauty of its own.' The train of thoughts went deeper and deeper. Bharat went deep into the thoughts of soul and the sublime mental state attained so intensity of sublime purity that bondage of karma shattered. Within a span of Antarmuhurt he was filled with the divine light of omniscience. Then Bharat performed five-fist pulling out of his hair and took the ascetic garb and ascetic broom provided by gods. He passed through the inner quarters, left his palace and proceeded towards the garden. His queens, ministers and guards bowed and paid homage.
