३१. [प्र. १० ] अत्थि णं भंते ! तीसे समाए भरहे वासे आवाहाइ वा, विवाहाइ वा, जण्णाइ वा, सद्धाइ वा, थालीपागाइ वा, मियपिंड - निवेदणाइ वा ?
[उ. ] णो इणट्टे समट्टे, ववगय - आवाह - विवाह - जण्ण-सद्ध - थालीपाक-मियपिंड - निवेदणाइ वा आपण्णत्ता समणाउसो !
३१. [ प्र. १० ] भगवन् ! क्या उस समय भरत क्षेत्र में आवाह - विवाह से पूर्व ताम्बूल - दानोत्सव अथवा वाग्दान रूप उत्सव, विवाह - परिणयोत्सव, यज्ञ - प्रतिदिन अपने-अपने इष्ट देव की पूजा, श्राद्ध पितृ-क्रिया, स्थालीपाक- लोकानुगत मृतक - क्रिया-विशेष तथा मृत - पिण्ड - निवेदन- मृत पुरुषों के लिए श्मशान भूमि में तीसरे दिन, नौवें दिन आदि पिण्ड, समर्पण - ये सब होते हैं ?
[उ. ] आयुष्मन् श्रमण गौतम ! ये सब नहीं होते। वे मनुष्य आवाह, विवाह, यज्ञ, श्राद्ध, स्थालीपाक तथा मृत-पिण्ड - निवेदन से निरपेक्ष होते हैं।
31. [Q. 10] Reverend Sir ! Is it a fact that offerings before marriage or festivity in this context, marriage ceremony, daily worship of gods of the concerned clan, celebration in the name of deceased ancestors, ceremonies performed at the death of a family member, offering in the name of the dead on the third day, ninth day and the like was being arranged in Bharat area at that time?
[Ans.] Blessed Gautam ! It is not true. Those human beings are indifferent towards all such ceremonies namely marriage, sacrificial fire, offering in the name of the dead and the like.
३१. [ प्र. ११ ] अत्थि णं भंते ! तीसे समाए भरहे वासे इंदमहाइ वा, खंदमहाइ वा णागमहाइ बा, जक्खमहाइ वा, भूअमहाइ वा, अगडमहाइ वा, तडागमहाइ वा, दहमहाइ वा णदीमहाइ वा, रुक्खमहाइ वा, पव्वयमहाइ वा, थूभमहाइ वा, चेइयमहाइ वा ?
[उ. ] णो इणट्ठे समट्ठे, ववगय-महिमा णं ते मणुआ पण्णत्ता ।
३१. [प्र. ११ ] भगवन् ! क्या उस समय भरत क्षेत्र में इन्द्रोत्सव, स्कन्दोत्सव - कार्त्तिकेयोत्सव, नागोत्सव, यक्षोत्सव, कूपोत्सव, तड़ागोत्सव, द्रहोत्सव, नदीउत्सव, वृक्षोत्सव, स्तूपोत्सव तथा चैत्योत्सवये सब होते हैं ?
[उ. ] गौतम ! ये नहीं होते। वे मनुष्य उत्सवों से निरपेक्ष होते हैं।
31. [Q. 11] Reverend Sir ! Is it a fact that festivals relating to Indra, Shanda, Kartikeya, Naga, yaksha, well, pond, lake, river, tree, memorial and temple were celebrated in Bharat area at that time?
[Ans.] Gautam ! It was not done. Those human beings were indifferent towards festivals.
