by going into a desert or other arid area. Some embrace death by jumping from a mountain peak, by jumping from a tree, by getting trapped in quick sand, by drowning, by jumping into fire, by consuming poison, by piercing themselves with weapons, by hanging from a branch of a tree. Some enter the body of a dead elephant or camel to get pierced and killed by vultures. Some get lost in a jungle and die. Some die of thirst and hunger during a drought. If at the moment of their death they are not in a tortured mental state (tormented and angry) then after death they are born as gods in any of the interstitial divine realms (Vanavyantar dev
loks). It is said that there they have the realm-specific state (gati), a sthiti (life-span) and upapat (instantaneous birth).
Bhante ! What is said to be the life-span (sthiti) of these gods? ____Gautam ! Their life-span is said to be twelve thousand years.
Bhante ! Are these gods endowed with riddhi (wealth and family), dyuti (radiance), yash (fame), bal (physical strength), virya (potency), purushakar (human form), and parakram (valour).
Yes, Gautam ! It is so. Bhante ! Are these gods true spiritual aspirants for next birth ? No, Gautam ! It is not so.
विवेचन-सत्र ६९ में अकाम तप आदि करते हुए मृत्यु प्राप्त करने वालों का कथन है। प्रस्तुत सूत्र ७० में दो प्रकार के लोगों की चर्चा है। प्रारम्भ में (क) कुछ उन लोगों की चर्चा है, जिन्हें अपराधवश,
वैमनस्य या द्वेषवश किन्हीं द्वारा घोर कष्ट दिया जाता है, जिससे वे प्राण छोड़ देते हैं। यदि यों कष्टपूर्वक * मरते समय उनके मन में तीव्र आर्त्त, रौद्रध्यान के संक्लिष्ट परिणाम नहीं आते तो उनका वाणव्यन्तर ॐ देवों में उत्पन्न होना बतलाया गया है। इसका अभिप्राय यह है कि यद्यपि वे मिथ्यात्वी होते हैं, उन द्वारा ॐ विविध प्रकार के कष्ट-सहन मोक्ष या आत्म-शुद्धि की निर्मल भावना से नहीं होता फिर भी उनके
परिणामों में इतनी-सी विशेषता रहती है कि वे कष्ट सहते हुए आर्त्त, रौद्र भाव से अभिभूत नहीं होते, ॐ अविचल रहते हुए, अत्यन्त दृढ़ता से उन कष्टों को सहते हुए मर जाते हैं। इसी बात को सूचित करने
के लिए असंकिलिट्र परिणामा पद का प्रयोग किया गया है। अतएव उन द्वारा किया गया वह कष्ट-सहन कि
अकाम निर्जरा की कोटि में आता है, जिसके फलस्वरूप वे देव योनि को प्राप्त करते हैं। ॐ इसके पश्चात् (ख) उत्तरार्ध में कुछ ऐसे लोगों की चर्चा है, जो कठोर शुद्ध संयम का पालन नहीं
कर पाने से, संयम भ्रष्ट होकर या सांसारिक सुखों की इच्छा या भौतिक कामनाओं की पूर्ति न होने से
