यदि कोई प्रश्न करे कि 'निर्वाण-पद' किसे कहते हैं ? तो उत्तर में कहना चाहिए कि जिस समय आत्मा ज्ञानावरणीय, दर्शनावरणीय, वेदनीय, मोहनीय, आयु, नाम, गोत्र
और अन्तराय कर्मों से मुक्त हो जाता है उसी अवस्था को 'निर्वाण' कहते हैं । निर्वाण-पद प्राप्त करने पर जितने भी कषाय हैं, जिनके कारण आत्मा संसार के बन्धन में फंसा रहता है, वह सब ज्ञानाग्नि में भस्म हो जाते हैं और इसी कारण आत्मा के शारीरिक और मानसिक दुःखों का अन्त हो जाता है इसी लिये उसको निर्वाण कहते हैं । इसी का नाम मोक्ष भी है ।
आत्मा तप और संयम के द्वारा ही उक्त पद की प्राप्ति करता है, क्योंकि आत्मा साधक है, तप और संयम साधन और निर्वाण-पद साध्य है । जब आत्मा सम्यक् साधनों से साध्य-पद प्राप्त कर लेता है तब वही सिद्ध, बुद्ध, अजर, अमर, पारंगत, पर-आत्मा, सर्वज्ञ, सर्व-दर्शी, अनन्त-शक्ति-सम्पन्न, अक्षय, अव्यय और ज्ञान से विभु हो जाता है । __ अब सूत्रकार प्रस्तुत विषय का उपसंहार करते हुए कहते हैं :
एवं खलु समणाउसो तस्स अणिदाणस्स इमेयारूवे कल्लाण-फल-विवागे जं तेणेव भवग्गहणेणं सिज्झति जाव सव्व-दुक्खाणं अंतं करेति ।
एवं खलु श्रमणाः! आयुष्मन्तः! तस्यानिदानस्यायमेतद्रूपः कल्याणफलविपाको यत्तेनैव भव-ग्रहणे सिद्ध्यति यावत् सर्व-दुःखानामन्तं करोति ।
पदार्थान्वयः-समणाउसो-हे आयुष्मन्त ! श्रमणो ! एवं खलु-इस प्रकार निश्चय से तस्स-उस अणिदाणस्स-अनिदान का इमेयारूवे-यह इस प्रकार का कल्लाण-कल्याण-रूप फल-विवागे-फल-विपाक हैं जं-जिससे तेणेव-उसी जन्म में भवग्गहणे णं-भव-ग्रहण में सिज्झति-सिद्ध हो जाता है जाव-यावत् सव्व-दुक्खाणं-सब दुःखों का अंतं-अन्त करेति-करता है।
मूलार्थ-हे आयुष्मन्त ! श्रमणो ! उस निदान-रहित क्रिया का यह कल्याण रूप फल-विपाक होता है कि जिससे उसी जन्म में भव-ग्रहण से सिद्ध हो जाता है और सब दुःखों का अन्त कर देता है ।

If someone asks what is meant by 'Nirvana-pad', then one should say that the state when the soul is freed from the karma of knowledge-obscuring, perception-obscuring, feeling, delusion, lifespan, name, lineage and obstacles, is called 'Nirvana'. Upon attaining Nirvana-pad, all the passions, which cause the soul to be trapped in the bonds of the world, are burnt to ashes by the fire of knowledge, and due to this, the physical and mental suffering of the soul ends, hence it is called Nirvana. This is also called Moksha.
The soul attains this state through penance and restraint, because the soul is the seeker, penance and restraint are the means, and Nirvana-pad is the goal. When the soul attains the goal through the right means, then it becomes a Siddha, Buddha, ageless, immortal, accomplished, self-realized, omniscient, all-seeing, possessing infinite power, imperishable, indestructible and filled with knowledge. Now the sutra-kar, concluding the present topic, says:
"Evam khalu samanauso tassa anidaanasssa imeyaruve kallan-phal-vivaage jan teneva bhavaggahane nam sijjhati jav savva-dukkhanam antam kareti."
"Thus, O venerable ones! This is the nature of the auspicious fruit of that which is without cause, which is attained in the same birth, and which brings an end to all suffering."
