अष्टमी दशा
सातवी दशा में भिक्षु की बारह प्रतिमाओं का वर्णन किया गया है । प्रतिमा समाप्त करने के अनन्तर मुनि को वर्षा ऋतु में निवास के योग्य क्षेत्र की गवेषणा करनी पड़ती है । उचित स्थान प्राप्त कर उसको सारी वर्षा ऋतु वहीं पर व्यतीत करनी पड़ती है, इस दशा में इसी सम्बन्ध में कुछ कहेंगे, अतः इसका नाम 'पर्युषणा कल्प' रखा गया है । क्योंकि यह चार महीने के लिए एक प्रकार से निश्चित निवास स्थान बन जाता है, अतः "पर्यषणा' (परितः-सामस्त्येन उषणा-वास:) यह नाम चरितार्थ भी होता है ।
जब एक स्थान पर चातुर्मास-निवास प्रारम्भ होता है तो एक मास और बीस रात्रि के अनन्तर एक 'संवत्सरी पर्व' आता है, उस संवत्सरी पर्व में आठ दिनों की 'पर्युषणा' संज्ञा मानी जाती है । आज कल की प्रथा के अनुसार उन दिनों में श्री श्रमण भगवान् महावीर स्वामी अथवा अन्य तीर्थङ्करों के पवित्र जीवन चरित्रों का अध्ययन किया जाता है । इस दशा में श्री श्रमण भगवान् महावीर स्वामी जी के जन्मादि कल्याणक जिस-२ नक्षत्र में हुए हैं उनका वर्णन किया गया है । यहां केवल जिस नक्षत्र में जो कल्याणक हुआ है उसकी सूचना मात्र दी गई है । इसका विस्तृत वर्णन अन्य शास्त्रों से जान लेना चाहिए । श्रोता और पाठकों को श्रीभगवान् के कल्याणकों से अवश्य शिक्षा लेनी चाहिए ।
अब सूत्रकार इस दशा का आदिम सूत्र कहते हैं :तेणं कालेणं तेणं समएणं समणे भगवं महावीरे पंच हत्थुत्तरा होत्या, तं जहा-हत्थुत्तराहिं चुए चइत्ता गब्भं वक्कते ।।१।।
