चार प्रकार के वृक्ष : चार प्रकार के पुरुष (१) आम्र वृक्ष के समान-उदार पुरुष-आम जैसे सेवा करने वालों को मधुर फल, शीतल छाया और विपुल काष्ठ आदि देकर तृप्त करता है। उसी प्रकार कुछ उदारमना पुरुष होते हैं, जो सेवा करने वालों को भरपूर धन, वस्त्र आदि देकर प्रसन्न कर देते हैं।
(२) ताड़ वृक्ष के समान-दीर्घ सेवा अल्प फल-ताड़ वृक्ष की लम्बे समय तक सेवा सँभाल करनी पडती है. फिर भी वह बड़ी कठिनाई से थोड़ा-थोड़ा फल देता है। उसी प्रकार कुछ पुरुष ऐसे होते हैं, जो जीवनभर सेवा करने वालों को भी थोड़ा-सा उपहार-पुरस्कार देकर खुश करना चाहते हैं।
(३) लता फल के समान-अति उदार पुरुष-खरबूजा, तरबूजा आदि की लताएँ साधारण-सी सेवा करने वालों को बड़ी सरलता से अति शीघ्र भरपूर फल देती हैं। उसी प्रकार कुछ अति उदार वृत्ति के पुरुष होते हैं, जो थोड़ी-सी सेवा करने वाले को दिल खोलकर पुरस्कार देते हैं।
(४) मेंद्र विषाण वृक्ष के समान-अनुदार पुरुष-टेढ़ी-मेढ़ी छोटी-छोटी फलियों वाला एक वृक्ष होता हैमेंद्र विषाण-उसकी फलियाँ देखने में तो सुन्दर दीखती हैं, परन्तु खाने में काम नहीं आतीं। उसी प्रकार कुछ अनुदार प्रकृति के, किन्तु मधुरभाषी पुरुष होते हैं, जो सेवा करने वाले को केवल मीठा वचन बोलकर खुश कर देते हैं, देते कुछ नहीं।
-स्थान ४, सूत्र ५५ FOUR KINDS OF TREES : FOUR KINDS OF NOBLE MEN (1) Generous person like a mango tree-A mango tree rewards those who take its care with sweet fruits, cool shade and ample wood. In the same way generous persons reward services to them with ample wealth, dresses etc. ___ (2) Long service with least reward like a palm tree-A palm tree requires care for a long duration and even then it rarely provides but a few fruits. In the same way are there some persons who try to please even those who serve them all their life with meager rewards.
(3) Very generous like creepers—Creepers of fruits like melon and water melon require very little care and easily yield large quantity of fruits. In the same way there are some extremely generous persons who give generous rewards even to those who have done little service to them.
(4) Ungenerous like Mendhra vishan trees-There is a tree with small twisted seed pods resembling horns of a ram. These pods are attractive but not edible. In the same way there are ungenerous sweet-speaking persons who reward services simply with charming words and nothing material.
