कवल एक ब्रह्म है, तो चार्वाक जैसे दार्शनिक केवल पाँच भूतों के अतिरिक्त अन्य किसी तत्त्व को नहीं 卐 मानते थे। जैनदर्शन जीव और अजीव दोनों तत्त्वों का अस्तित्व मानता है। यह सम्पूर्ण लोक इन्हीं दो तत्त्वों का विस्तार है। मुख्य शब्दों का अर्थ इस प्रकार है
त्रस-जो उद्देश्यपूर्वक एक स्थान से दूसरे स्थान पर गति करे, द्वीन्द्रिय से लेकर पंचेन्द्रिय तक के जीव, ये असंख्यात हैं। स्थावर-जो एक स्थान पर स्थिर हैं। पृथ्वी, जल, अग्नि, वायु और वनस्पतिकायिक जीव। ॐ ये अनन्त हैं।
सयोनिक-योनि अर्थात् उत्पत्ति या जन्म लेने का स्थान। योनि सहित सभी संसारी जीव सयोनिक। के अयोनिक-जिनकी उत्पत्ति न होती हो। देह मुक्त जीव।
। सवेदक-कामवासना की अनुभूति वाले। अवेदक-कामवासना से मुक्त दशम गुणस्थान से आगे ॐ के जीव।
सपुद्गल-जो कर्म, मन, वाणी और शरीर सहित है। संसारी जीव। संसारसमापनक-संसार में जन्म-मरण करने वाले जीव। असंसारसमापनक-संसार चक्र से मुक्त। शाश्वत-कर्ममुक्त; सिद्ध; आत्मा। अशाश्वत-जो जन्म-मरणादि दशाओं में भ्रमण करते हैं।
आकाश-सभी द्रव्यों का आधारभूत द्रव्य। आकाश द्रव्य अनादि अनन्त है। नोआकाश-आकाश ॐ द्रव्य के अतिरिक्त अरूपी अजीव द्रव्य।
____धर्म-जीव और पुद्गल की गति में सहायक द्रव्य। अधर्म-जीव और पुद्गल की स्थिति में 卐 सहायक द्रव्य।
Elaboration-All substances in this universe are divided into two groups-living and non-living. No third group exists. Philosophers from 45 the Vedanta school believe in just one entity, the living (there is only one
Brahma). Philosophers from another school, Charvak, accept no entity 5 other than the five bhoots (matter entities-earth, water, fire, air andsky). 41 Jain philosophy accepts existence of both living and non-living entities.
This whole universe is growth and expansion of these two entities. 41 TECHNICAL TERMS
Tras (mobile)--that which is capable of willfully moving from one 15 place to another; this includes all two to five sensed beings, 451 innumerable. Sthavar (immobile)—that which is stationed at one place;
this includes earth-bodied, .water-bodied, fire-bodied, air-bodied and plant-bodied beings, which are infinite.
Sayonik (with a place of birth)-yoni means place of birth; those having a place of birth are sayonik. Ayonik (without a place of birth), those who are not born or the liberated ones.
