diamond-hard armour and Chamarendra created two great war machines called Mahashilakantak and Rath-musal. With the divine help from these two, Kunik's strength increased. In fact, Kunik won the Mahashilakantak only due to this divine help, otherwise his victory was in doubt.
महाशिलाकण्टक संग्राम का स्वरूप DETAILS OF MAHASHILAKANTAK BATTLE
११. [ प्र. ] से केणट्टेणं भंते ! एवं वुच्चति ' महासिलाकंटए संगामे महासिलाकंटए संगामे' !
[ उ. ] गोयमा ! महासिलाकंटए णं संगामे वट्टमाणे जे तत्थ आसे वा हत्थी वा जोहे वा सारही वा तणेण वा कट्टेण वा पत्तेण वा सक्कराए वा अभिहम्मति सव्वे से जाणति 'महासिलाए अहं अभिहते महासिलाए अहं अभिहते'; से तेणट्टेणं गोयमा ! महासिलाकंटए संगामे महासिलाकंटए संगामे ।
११. [ प्र. ] भगवन् ! इस 'महाशिलाकण्टक' संग्राम को महाशिलाकण्टक संग्राम क्यों कहा जाता है ?
[उ. ] गौतम ! जब महाशिलाकण्टक संग्राम हो रहा था, तब उस संग्राम में जो भी घोड़ा, हाथी, योद्धा या सारथी आदि तृण से, काष्ठ से पत्ते से या कंकर आदि से आहत होते, वे सब ऐसा अनुभव करते थे कि हम महाशिला (के प्रहार ) से मारे गये हैं। ( अर्थात् महाशिला हमारे ऊपर आ पड़ी है ।) गौतम ! इस कारण से इस संग्राम को महाशिलाकण्टक संग्राम कहा जाता है।
11. [Q] Bhante ! Why this Mahashilakantak battle is called Mahashilakantak battle?
[Ans.] Gautam ! When the battle was going on all the horses, elephants, soldiers and charioteers, though hit by straw, wood, leaf or pebble, felt that they were hit by large rocks (mahashila). Gautam ! That is why this battle has been called Mahashilakantak battle.
१२. [.] महासिलाकंटए णं भंते! संगामे वट्टमाणे कति जणसतसाहस्सीओ वहियाओ ? [उ. ] गोयमा ! चउरासीतिं जणसतसाहस्सीओ वहियाओ।
१२. [ प्र. ] भगवन् ! जब महाशिलाकण्टक संग्राम हो रहा था, तब उसमें कितने लाख मनुष्य मारे गये ?
[उ.] गौतम ! महाशिलाकण्टक संग्राम में चौरासी लाख मनुष्य मारे गये ।
12. [Q.] Bhante ! How many hundred thousand men were killed in this Mahashilakantak battle?
[Ans.] Gautam ! Eighty four hundred thousand men were killed in the Mahashilakantak battle.
