Illustration No. 14 चार लोकपाल सौधर्मकल्प के अधिपति देवराज शक्र के आज्ञानुवर्ती चार लोकपाल देव रहते हैं।
(१) पूर्व दिशा का अधिरक्षक सोम देव है। उसके अधीन मंगल, शनि, केतु आदि ग्रह तथा अन्तरिक्ष से सम्बन्धित सभी कार्य रहते हैं। जैसे-सूर्य, चन्द्र, तारामण्डल, अग्निकुमार, वायुकुमार आदि। आकाश में बादलों का गर्जन, बिजली चमकना, भरत क्षेत्र में अनेक प्रकार की प्राकृतिक विपदाएँ आदि से सम्बन्धित सब कार्य सोम महाराज के अधीन हैं।
(२) दक्षिण दिशा का स्वामी यम देव है। प्रेत, नरकपाल, परमाधामी देव, कादर्पिक आदि देव, भरत क्षेत्र में होने वाले सभी रोग, महामारी, मृत्य, महासंग्राम, दंगा, अग्निप्रकोप आदि कार्यों की जिम्मेदारी उनके अधीनस्थ देव सँभालते हैं।
(३) पश्चिम दिशा का रक्षक वरुणदेव है। उदधि कुमार (समुद्र देव), नागकुमार, स्तनित कुमार आदि देव उनके कार्याधीक्षक हैं। अतिवृष्टि अनावृष्टि, बादलों का गर्जन-तर्जन, समुद्र, नदी, तूफान, बाढ़, दुर्भिक्ष आदि सब कार्यों की जिम्मेदारी उन पर है।
(४) उत्तरदिशा रक्षक वैश्रमण देव है। सुवर्ण कुमार (धन के रक्षक देव) वाणव्यन्तर देव-देवियाँ, भरत क्षेत्रवर्ती स्वर्ण, चाँदी, ताँबा आदि की खानें, हीरे, रत्न आदि के भण्डार तथा धरती पर उत्पन्न होने वाले धान्य आदि की फसलें, समस्त भौतिक सम्पदा पर वैश्रमण (कुबेर) देव का ध्यान रहता है।

FOUR LOK-PALS Devendra Shakra, the overlord of gods has four Lok-pals (governors of different directions) under him.
(1) Soma is the guardian of the east. Under his command and supervision are planets like Mars, Saturn and Ketu and all activities related to space. For example--the sun, the moon, stars, Agni Kumar gods, Vayu Kumar gods etc. Activities like thundering of clouds, lightening, and various natural calamities in the Jambu continent are under the command of Soma.
(2) Yam is the guardian of the south. Under his command and supervision are Pret, Narak-pal, Paramadhami and Kandarpik gods as well as calamities like diseases, epidemics, deaths, great wars, riots and fire.
(3) Varun is the guardian of the west. Under his command and supervision are Udadhi Kumar (gods of sea), Naag Kumar, Stanit Kumar and other gods as well as activities including excessive rains, insufficient rain, thundering of clouds, seas, rivers, storms, floods, and famines.
(4) Vaishraman is the guardian of the north. Under his command and supervision are Suvarna Kumar (guardian gods of wealth), Vanavyantar gods and goddesses as well as mines of gold, silver, copper and other minerals; stocks of diamonds and other gems; all the land crops and all physical wealth.
