तामली तापस (१) (१) ताम्रलिप्ती निवासी मौर्यपुत्र तामली गाथापति बहुत ही धनाढ्य तथा प्रतिष्ठा प्राप्त था। एकबार उसके मन में विचार उत्पन्न हुआ, मुझे अभी जो सुख समृद्धि प्राप्त हुई है, वह पूर्वकृत पुण्यों का फल है। अब यदि मैं ॐ इस जन्म में कुछ शुभ कर्म, तप-दान आदि नहीं करूँगा तो अगला जन्म तो दुःखमय ही बीतेगा। अतः इस घर
परिवार को छोड़कर मुझे तप आदि करना चाहिए। उसने अपने स्वजन-परिजनों आदि को भोजन पर आमंत्रित किया। सभी को भोजन कराया तथा मान सन्मान किया।
(२) पश्चात् स्वजन-परिजनों के समक्ष ज्येष्ठ पुत्र को अभिषेक किया। गृहभार सौंपा, पण्डितों ने मंत्रोच्चार म पूर्वक आशीर्वचन कहे।
(३) तामली गाथापति ने सिर का मुण्डन किया। परिव्राजक वेष धारण किया। हाथ में काष्टपात्र लिए। 卐 'प्रणामा प्रव्रज्या' स्वीकार कर घर से निकल पड़ा। इस प्रव्रज्या के अनुसार मार्ग में कुत्ता, गधा, गाय आदि 卐 मानव या देवी देव कोई भी दिखाई पड़ता तो हाथ जोड़कर उसे प्रणाम करता हुआ वन की ओर चला गया।
(४) वन में जाकर तामली तापस ने अभिग्रह धारण किया-"आज से मैं निरन्तर बेले-बेले तप करूँगा। सूर्य के सन्मुख खड़ा होकर आतापना लूँगा। भिक्षा में पके हुए चावल के सात दाने ग्रहण करूँगा। शुद्ध पानी में २१ बार धोकर उन सात चावल दानों का ही आहार करूँगा।"

TAMALI TAPAS (1) (1) In Tamralipti city lived a householder named Mauryaputra Tamali. He was very rich and respected. Once he thought-The happiness and wealth I have is due to the merits from my past birth. Now if I do not indulge in good deeds, austerities, and charity my next life will be miserable. Therefore I should renounce my household and do penance etc. He invited his friends and relatives for meals. He offered them food and honoured them.
(2) In presence of his friends and relatives he anointed his eldest son and gave him the charge of the household. Priests blessed him amidst chanting of mantras.
(3) Tamali Gathapati tonsured his head and put on the Parivrajak garb. He took wooden bowls in his hand and left his house after accepting Pranama initiation. Following the code of this initiation he moved towards a jungle greeting everything on the path with joined palms may that be a dog, donkey, cow, man or god-goddess.
(4) When in jungle hermit Tamali resolved—“Since this day I will observe a series of two day fasts. I will stand facing the sun and endure its heat. As alms I will accept seven grains of cooked rice. I will only eat those seven grains after washing them 21 times in water."
