(कि अब मैं जो उत्तर दूँ, उससे प्रश्नकर्ता को सन्तोष होगा या नहीं?); उसकी बुद्धि में भेद उत्पन्न हुआ (कि मैं क्या करूँ?); उसके मन में कालुष्य (क्षोभ) उत्पन्न हुआ (कि अब मैं तो इस विषय में कुछ भी नहीं जानता), इस कारण वह तापस, वैशालिक श्रावक पिंगल निर्ग्रन्थ के प्रश्नों का कुछ भी उत्तर (प्रमोक्ष-प्रश्नरूपी बंधन से मुक्त होने का उपाय) नहीं सूझने पर चुपचाप रह गया।
14. When Vaishalik Shravak ascetic Pingal asked the aforesaid questions to Parivrajak Skandak of Katyayan clan, the latter was filled with shanka (doubt as to how to find answers to these questions and how to reply ?), kanksha (apprehension that the answers will be correct or not ?), vichikitsa (incredulity that the answer will satisfy the inquirer or not ?), bhed (disjunction as to what to do and what not ?) and kalushya (distress that he was ignorant on the subject). When he failed to find any solution (pramoksh) to the problem he faced, that Parivrajak gave no reply to Vaishalik Shravak ascetic Pingal's questions and remained silent..
१५. तए णं से पिंगलए नियंठे वेसालीसावए खंदयं कच्चायणसगोत्तं दोच्चं पि तच्चं पि इणमक्खेवं पुच्छे-मागहा ! किं सअंते लोए जाव केण वा मरणेणं मरमाणे जीवे वड्डइ वा हायति वा ? एतावं ताव आइक्खाहि बुच्चमाणे एवं।
१५. इसके पश्चात् उस वैशालिक श्रावक पिंगल निर्ग्रन्थ ने कात्यायनगोत्रीय स्कन्दक परिव्राजक से दो बार, तीन बार भी उन्हीं प्रश्नों को पूछा कि-मागध ! लोक सान्त है या अनन्त? यावत्-किस मरण से मरने से जीव का संसार बढ़ता या घटता है ? इतने प्रश्नों का उत्तर दो।
15. Then Vaishalik Shravak ascetic Pingal repeated the aforesaid questions to Parivrajak Skandak of Katyayan clan two-three timesO Maagadh (Magadh born) ! Is the Lok with or without limit ?... and so on up to... by what kind of death a dying being expands the cycles of rebirth (samsar) and by what kind of death a dying being reduces the cycles of rebirth (samsar) ? Please answer these questions.
१६. तए णं से खंदए कच्चाणसगोत्ते पिंगलएणं नियंठेणं वेसालीसावएणं दोच्चं पि तच्चं पि इणमक्खेवं पुच्छिए समाणे संकिए कंखिए वितिगिंछिए भेदसमावण्णे कलुससमावन्ने नो संचाएइ पिंगलयस्स नियंठस्स वेसालिसावयस्स किंचि वि पमोक्खमक्खाइउं, तुसिणीए संचिट्ठइ।
१६. जब वैशालिक श्रावक पिंगल निर्ग्रन्थ ने कात्यायनगोत्रीय स्कन्दक परिव्राजक से दो-तीन बार पुनः उन्हीं प्रश्नों को पूछा तो वह पुनः पूर्ववत् शंकित, कांक्षित, विचिकित्साग्रस्त, भेदसमापन्न तथा कालुष्य को प्राप्त हुआ, किन्तु वैशालिक श्रावक पिंगल निर्ग्रन्थ के प्रश्नों का कुछ भी उत्तर न दे सका। अतः चुप होकर रह गया।
