Since the opening of the Rāmāyaṇa Department in the Oriental Institute on 12-3-1951 it took three years for the collection of about 200 MSS. of the Valmiki-Rāmāyaṇa in all the principal scripts of India, including even the oldest MS. of the Rāmāyaṇa (C. 1020 A.D.) from the Bir Library at Khatmandu, Nepal. When the collation of these MSS. started in April 1954 a necessity was felt to make a collection of all the quotations from the Valmiki-Rāmāyaṇa scattered over the vast Sanskrit literature for the Testimonia which would be most useful in the Textual reconstruction of the young Epic. As it would be no doubt very easy to trace the Rāmāyaṇa quotations with the help of an Index of the Quarter-verses of the Rāmāyaṇa, the work of preparing such an Index was immediately started. The Index of the half-verses of the Valmiki-Rāmāyaṇa prepared by the late Mm. Prof. Kuppuswami Sastri and attached to his edition of the Valmiki-Rāmāyaṇa (Madras Law Journal Press, 1933) has been long out of print and has been unfortunately omitted even from the second edition (1958). The Quarter-verses in the Epics and the Puranas are generally independent thought-units and are very often quoted by themselves. The present Index will be useful for a comparative study of the language, words, phrases, expressions and similes which alone can throw adequate light on the mutual relation of the Epics and the Purāņas. The Index is prepared on the basis of the Vulgate represented in the Gujarati Printing Press edition (1912-1920), Bombay.

Pandya, B.A., a part-time member of the Rāmāyaṇa Department for preparing the Index, arranging the Index-cards in the Cabinet and finally preparing the Press-copy. I am also grateful to my colleagues, Shri M. A. Joshi (formerly the Technical Assistant in the Oriental Institute) and Shri R. K. Joshi, Vyakaraṇācārya, who are full-time members of the Rāmāyaṇa Department for reading the proofs.
