FOREWORD
It gives me great pleasure to put in the hands of Sanskritists, the first volume of the Pāda-Index of one of the two Epics of India, namely, the Rāmāyana of Vālınīki, prepared by Prof. G. H. Blatt, Ex-Director of the Oriental Institute, and General Editor of the Critical Edition of the Valmikiya-Rāmāyaṇa. Prof. Bhatt has made a critical study of this Epic and has already edited the Bālakānda, under the scheme of preparing a Critical Edition of this young Epic.
The Index is based on the Vulgate Text used for collation in our Critical Edition of the Rāmāyanat, which is the edition of the Gujarati Printing Press, Bombay (1012-1020 A.D.), published in seven volumes, along with three commentaries.
I hope this Pacla-Indles will be useful to all students of Sanskrit Literature.
We are thankful to the University Grants Commission and the State of Gujarat for the liberal financial assistance given towards the publication of the Critical Edition of the Rämäyana and works like this in the Gackwad's Oriental Series.
