वसुदेवहिण्डी
इहं सुरासुरिंदविंदवंदिय-चलणारविंदो उसभो नाम पढ़मो राया जगप्पियामहो आसी। तस्य पुत्तसयं। दुवे पहाणा भरहो बाहुबली य। उसभसिरी पुत्तसयस्स पुरसयं च दाऊण पाइयो। तत्थ भरहो भरहवासचूड़ामणि, तस्सेव णामेण इहं भारतवासं ति पवुच्चंति।
(प्रथम खण्ड पृ. १८६) - यहाँ जगत्पिता ऋषभदेव प्रथम राजा हुए। सुर और असुर दोनों ही के इन्द्र उनके चरण-कमलों की वन्दना करते थे। उनके (ऋषभदेव के) सौ पुत्र थे। उनमें दो प्रमुख थे - भरत और बाहुबली। ऋषभदेव शतपुत्र-ज्येष्ठ को राजश्री सौंपकर प्रव्रजित हो गये। भारतवर्ष का चूड़ामणि (शिरोमुकुट) भरत हुआ। उसी के नाम से इस देश को 'भारतवर्ष' ऐसा कहते हैं।
- इसके पश्चात् भगवान् ऋषभनाथ ने अपने ज्येष्ठ पुत्र का साम्राज्याभिषेक किया तथा 'भरत से शासित प्रदेश भारतवर्ष हो' - ऐसी घोषणा की। 'भारतवर्ष' को उन्होंने सनाथ किया।
प्रमोदभरतः प्रेमनिर्भरा बन्धुता तदा। तमाह्वत भरतं भावि समस्त भरताधिपम्॥ तन्नाम्ना भारतं वर्षमितिहासीजनास्पदम्। हिमाद्रेरासमुद्राच्च क्षेत्रं चक्रभृतामिदम्॥
(१५.१५८-१५९) - समस्त भरत क्षेत्र के उस भावी अधिपति को आनन्द की अतिशयता से स्नेह करनेवाले बन्धु-समूह ने 'भरत' ऐसा कहकर सम्बोधन दिया पुकारा। उस' भरत' के नाम से हिमालय से समुद्र-पर्यन्त यह चक्रवर्तियों का क्षेत्र 'भारतवर्ष' नाम से लोक में प्रतिष्ठित हुआ।
जम्बूदीवपण्णत्ति
भरहे अइत्थदेवे णहिड्डिए महजुए जावपलि ओवमढिइए परिवसइ । से एएणट्टेणं गोयमा, एवं वुच्चड़ भरहेवासं।
