पत्ता-दूसरे दिन नागभवन के तरुकोटर में दूसरे के धन का जिसे स्वाद लग गया है, ऐसे नागदत्त ने देवों के प्रभाव से मैं तुम्हें दूँगा"। फिर उसने (नागदत्त ने) नागराज से पूछा-हे देव, आपने मुझे क्यों दरिद्र कहीं एक मणि देखा ॥२६॥
बना दिया है? माँगते हुए भी कोई वर मुझे नहीं दिया। तब नाग कहता है-देता हूँ। २७
पत्ता-वणिक कहता है-भो-भो ! विषधर श्रेष्ठ आदरणीय, सुकेतु का नाश करनेवाला और बाहुओं किसी प्रकार रखने के लिए उसने उसे निकाला। फिर क्रोध की ज्वाला से विस्फुरित होकर, और यह का भूषण बल मुझे दीजिए॥२७॥ कहकर कि यह मेरे हाथ पर क्यों नहीं आता, हुंकार भरते हुए उसके भारी पत्थर से प्रहार करने पर वह मणि आकाश में उछलकर उसके भालतल से जा लगा। उसके उठे हुए खण्ड (नोक) से वह विदारित हो गया। नागदत्त को बुलाया गया। धन-संख व्यवहारी से जीता गया वसुन्धरा का पति (सुकेतु) हार को प्राप्त गम्भीर ध्वनिवाला साँप कहता है-“धन से दिव्य धन नहीं जीता जा सकता। जिसका पुण्य सहायक हुआ। लेकिन जितना धन उसका बढ़ा, वह दुष्ट उतना ही धन हार गया (जुए में)। धनगर्व से दुष्ट आदमी होकर चलता है उसके प्राणों का अपहरण कौन कर सकता है ? लोभी तुम मुझे उसके लिए समर्पित कर उद्दण्ड (उद्भट) हो जाता है। सुकेतु ने वह धन माँगा। उसने कहा-"तुम अपनी भौंहें टेढ़ी क्यों करते हो, दो, और यह मर्यादा वचन उससे कह दो। कहो कि नागराज कर्मभार धारण करना चाहता है।
