घत्ता-पूर्वजन्म में मैं सुकान्त नाम का वणिक पुत्र था, धनसंचित करनेवाला। और तू रतिवेगा नाम से जिन-वचनों को सुनकर और अपने हृदय में मानकर मालती की माला से शोभित मणिमाली देव अपनी मेरी प्यारी घरवाली थी॥१॥ कान्ता के साथ गया। नवकमल के समान मुखवाला और श्री को माननेवाला वह आकाश में बिहार करता हुआ, जिसमें ऊँचे तालवृक्ष हैं, ऐसे धान्यकमाल नामक कानन में पहुँचा, जो जग में प्रसिद्ध और वृक्षों से यह मृणालवती नगर दिखाई देता है, जहाँ दोनों का विवाह-प्रेम हुआ था। किसी प्रकार चीरांचल से समृद्ध था। हंसों से धलित और चक्रवाकों से मुखरित था। उसने सुन्दर सर्पसरोवर देखा, जो चंचल जल पकड़ा भर नहीं था, और वह उन्मत्त पोछे लग गया था। प्राणों के हरण के भय से विघटित, दौड़ते हुए हम से आन्दोलित, कमलों से पुष्पित, गजमद से श्यामल, केशर से पिंगल, पत्तों से नीला और भ्रमरों से काला लोग यहाँ गिर पड़े थे। यहाँ तुम्हारे पैरों का खून गिरा था।
