महापुराणे उत्तरपुराणम्
तदा दृष्टापदानस्य प्रद्युम्नस्य खगाधिपः । परार्ध्यवस्तुदानेन महती माननां व्यधात् ॥ ५ ॥ अवतीर्णमिव स्वगांधौवनकविभूषणम् । भुवं कदाचिद्रपमाहायश्चातिभास्वरम् ॥ ७५ ॥ अवलोक्य स्मराकान्तबुद्धया काञ्चनमालया। जन्मान्तरागतस्नेहकृतानेक विकारया ॥ ७६ ॥ प्रकाशयन्त्या स्वान्तस्थं भावं पापपरीतश। कुमार तुभ्यं मइयां गृहाण विधिपूर्वकम् ॥ ७७ ॥ प्रज्ञप्तिविद्यामित्युक्तस्तया मायामयेहया। सोऽपि मातस्तथैवाहं करिष्यामीति सम्मदात् ॥ ७० ॥ आदाय धीमांस्तां विद्या सिद्धकूटमुपागमत् । कृत्वा तत्र नमस्कारं चारणौ मुनिपुङ्गवौ ॥ ७९ ॥ श्रित्वा श्रुत्वा ततो धर्म ज्ञात्वा विद्याप्रसाधने । हेतुं तदुपदेशेन सञ्जयन्तं समाश्रयत् ॥ ८० ॥ आकर्य तत्पुराणञ्च तदर्चापादसंश्रयात् । विद्यां सम्पाद्य सजातसम्मदः पुरमागमत् ॥ ८१ ॥ दृष्ट्वा द्विगुणिताकारशोभं तं कामकातरा । प्रार्थयन्ती बहुपायैरनिच्छन्तं महामतिम् ॥ २ ॥ पुरुषव्रतसम्पन्नमतिद्वेषादबूबुधत् । कुमारः सहवासस्य योग्यो नायं कुचेष्टितः ॥ ८३ ॥ जानाम्यनभिजातस्वमस्योत खचराधिपम् । विचारविकल: सोऽपि तदुक्त तत्प्रतीतवान् ॥ ८४ ॥ विद्युइंष्ट्रादिकान्पश्चशतानि तनुजान्मिथः ।आइय देवदत्तोऽयं ४दौष्टयोपांशुवधोचितः ॥ ८५॥ नतः केनाप्युपायेन भवद्भिः क्रियतां व्यसुः । इत्याह खचराधीशो५ लब्धाज्ञास्तेऽपि कोपिनः ॥ ८६ ॥ स्वयं प्रागपि तं हन्तुं कृतमन्त्राः परस्परम् । तथेति प्रतिपद्याती निर्ययुस्तश्चिकीर्षवः ॥ ८७ ॥
दिया ॥ ७२-७३ ॥ उस समय राजा कालसंवरने, जिसका पराक्रम देख लिया है ऐसे प्रद्युम्नका श्रेष्ठ वस्तुएँ देकर बहुत भारी सन्मान किया ॥७४ ॥ यौवन ही जिसका आभूषण है, जो स्वर्गसे पृथिवीपर अवतीर्ण हुएके समान जान पड़ता है, और जो आभूषणोंसे अत्यन्त देदीप्यमान है ऐसे प्रद्यनको देखकर किसी समय राजा कालसंवरकी रानी काश्चनमालाकी बुद्धि कामसे आक्रान्त हो गइ, वह पूर्वजन्मसे आये हुए स्नेहके कारण अनेक विकार करने लगी, तथा पापसे युक्त हो अपने मनका भाव प्रकट करती हुई कुमारसे कहने लगी कि 'हे कुमार' मैं तेरे लिए प्रज्ञप्ति नामकी विद्या देना चाहती हूँ उसे तू विधि पूर्वक ग्रहण कर' । इस प्रकार माया पूर्व चेष्टासे युक्त रानीने कहा। बुद्धिमान प्रद्युम्नने भी 'हे माता! मैं वैसा ही करूँगा' यह कहकर बड़े हर्षसे उससे वह विद्या ले ली
और उसे सिद्ध करनेके लिए सिद्धकूट चैत्यालयकी ओर गमन किया। वहाँ जाकर उसने चारणऋद्धि धारी मुनियोंको नमस्कार किया, उनसे धर्मोपदेश सुना और तदनन्तर उनके कहे अनुसार विद्या सिद्ध करनेके लिए सञ्जयन्त मुनिकी प्रतिमाका आश्रय लिया ॥७५-८०॥ उसने संजयन्त मुनिका पुराण सुना, उनकी प्रतिमाके चरणोंके आश्रयसे विद्या सिद्ध की और तदनन्तर हर्षित होता हुआ वह अपने नगरको लौट आया ।। ८१ ॥ विद्या सिद्ध होनेसे उसके शरीरकी शोभा दूनी हो गई थी अतः उसे देखकर रानी काञ्चनमाला कामसे कातर हो उठी। उसने अनेक उपायोंके द्वारा कुमारसे प्रार्थना की परन्तु महाबुद्धिमान कुमारने उसकी इच्छा नहीं की। जब उसे इस बातका पता चला कि यह कुमार पुरुषव्रत सम्पन्न है और हमारे सहवासके योग्य नहीं है तब उसने अपने पति कालसंवरसे कहा कि यह कुमार कुचेष्टा युक्त है अतः जान पड़ता है कि यह कुलीन नहीं है-उच्चकुलमें उत्पन्न हुश्रा नहीं है। विचार रहित कालसंवरने स्वीकी बातका विश्वास. कर लिया। उसने उसी समय विद्युदंष्ट्र आदि अपने पाँच सौ पुत्रोंको बुलाकर एकान्तमें आज्ञा दी कि 'यह देवदत्त अपनी दुष्टताके कारण एकान्तमें बध करनेके योग्य है अतः आप लोग इसे किसी उपायसे प्राणरहित कर डालिये। इस प्रकार विद्याधरोंके राजा कालसंवरसे आज्ञा पाकर वे पाँच सौ कुमार अत्यन्त कुपित हो उठे। वे पहले ही उसे मारनेके लिए परस्पर सलाह कर चुके थे फिर राजाकी आज्ञा प्राप्त हो गई । 'ऐसा ही करूँगा' यह कहकर उन्होंने पिताकी आज्ञा शिरोधार्य की और सबके
