The thirty-first chapter describes how the commander, with his victorious army, subdued the kings of other countries who had stood their ground and displayed their prowess. ||16|| Those kings, honoring the commander and offering gifts with fear, bowed down to the Chakravarti from afar. ||7|| Just as a man subdues a woman through the act of *karagraha* (hand-holding ceremony), so too did Chakravarti Bharat subdue the southern region through *karagraha* (tax collection). He then forcefully seized its essence and journeyed towards the southern sea. ||18|| Seeing the forest on the edge of the sea, filled with clove and sandalwood vines and small cardamom plants, he felt great joy. ||66|| The gentle breeze from the forest, carrying the fragrance of cardamom and blowing over the lotus-filled ponds, served the Chakravarti. ||10|| The forest, with its branches swaying in the wind and bearing flowers as offerings, seemed to welcome the Chakravarti. ||101|| The trees, with their branches rustling in the wind and the sound of bees buzzing distinctly, seemed to be calling out to Bharat's soldiers, inviting them to rest. ||102|| The Chakravarti then stationed his army in that forest, near the great gate called *Vaijayanta* and on the bank of the sea. ||103|| The forest and Bharat's army were alike, for just as the forest was filled with *sanaga* (motha plants), so too was the army filled with *sanaga* (elephants). Just as the forest was filled with *bahupunnaga* (nagakeśara trees), so too was the army filled with *bahupunnaga* (many excellent men). Just as the forest was filled with *sumana* (flowers and fruits), so too was the army filled with *sumana* (divine and good-hearted men). And just as the forest was filled with *bahupatra ratha* (many birds), so too was the army filled with *bahupatra ratha* (many chariots and vehicles). ||104||
