Mahapuraanam
A firm mind in the matter of the body is obtained by the knowledge of the royal science. A mind that is dependent on both worlds is obtained by the knowledge of the Dharma Shastra. ||34||
Those Kshatriyas who became great sages by producing a Tirtha are called Mahadeva due to their greatness. ||35||
Those who are of the great lineage of the first Trishatri, the kings, have also attained the fame of Mahadeva due to their greatness. ||36||
Their wives are also called Mahadevi due to their great lineage, being married to great men and giving birth to great souls. ||37||
Thus, when the Jain side is established, if someone who follows another doctrine, whose mind is corrupted by false views, were to say: "We are the Mahadeva, we are the saviors of the world, there is no one greater than our deity, and there is no doctrine greater than ours." ||38-39||
Then we say that this is not the essence of the ocean of existence. The path that is the means of crossing it is the path taught by the Jina. ||40||
An Arhanta is the only one who is truly liberated, free from all faults. Others who claim to be liberated are merely pretending, because they have no certainty about the excellence of their speech, soul, and fortune. ||41||
The Jina, who is endowed with the excellence of speech, etc., is the benefactor of all, the seer of all things, the Supreme Lord, the Supreme Soul, and the eternal. Therefore, he alone can be considered liberated. ||42||
One should know the excellence of his speech, by which he pleases the entire assembly with his single divine word. ||43||
Similarly, the excellence of his soul is manifested by the complete destruction of the veils of knowledge, perception, and the karmas that cause delusion and obstruction, and by his proximity to infinite knowledge, infinite perception, infinite bliss, and infinite power. ||44||
And the excellence of his fortune is manifested by the attainment of eight types of supernatural powers, the creation of the Samavasarana ground, etc. ||45||
It is possible that an Arhanta is also one who has destroyed the veils of knowledge, perception, the karmas that cause delusion, and the obstructing karmas. Therefore, one should practice the teachings of the Arhanta Deva to purify one's mind. ||33||
