The Forty-First Chapter
281. Those who are the offspring of Brahma are called Brahmanas. Brahma himself is the self-existent, the Lord, the Supreme, the best of Jinas. ||127||
He is the supreme Brahma, the Jina-Indra, because he is the enhancer of qualities. The supreme Brahma, which is knowledge, is under his control, so say the lords of the ascetics. ||128||
He who wears the skin of a deer, has matted hair, a beard, etc., and who, having become a donkey of lust, has fallen from the brilliance of Brahma, is not Brahma. ||129||
Those who have been born from the pure womb of knowledge, which is the divine form of the Jina-Indra, are considered to be twice-born. ||130||
These best of the twice-born, who are pure and protectors, should be respected. They are honored by the vows, mantras, and other rituals that have been instilled in them. ||131||
We know these best of the castes, who are devoted to patience and purity, who are content, who have attained excellence, and whose ornament is unblemished conduct. ||132||
Those who have a corrupt conduct, who falsely claim to be twice-born, who are always eager to begin sin, and who cruelly kill animals, are not Brahmanas. ||133||
What will be the fate of those who, accepting all the violent dharma, kill animals, and who earn their livelihood from the scriptures of sin? ||134||
Those who consider the inspiring dharma, which is described in the scriptures of adharma, to be dharma, I see no one else on earth but them as karma-chandala. ||135||
Those who are cruel and kill animals are experts in sinful deeds, robbers, and external to the righteous. Such men should be punished by the kings. ||136||
Those who are more cruel than even the demons, who are eager to kill animals, and who are devoid of compassion, if such men attain excellence, then... ||137||
Further, I say something else... ||126||
Those who are the offspring of Brahma are called Brahmanas, and the self-existent, the Lord, the Supreme, and the Jina-Indra are called Brahma.
Meaning: Those who have entered the lineage of disciples by listening to the teachings of the Jina-Indra are called Brahmanas. ||127||
The Jina-Indra himself is the original supreme Brahma, because he is the enhancer of qualities, and the supreme Brahma, which is knowledge, is under his control, so say the lords of the ascetics. ||128||
He who wears the skin of a deer, has matted hair, a beard, etc., and who, having become a donkey of lust, has fallen from the brilliance of Brahma, is not Brahma. ||129||
Therefore, those who have been born from the pure womb of knowledge, which is the divine form of the Jina-Indra, are called twice-born. ||130||
Those who have been honored by vows, mantras, and rituals are considered to be the best of the twice-born. ||131||
These best of the castes, who are devoted to patience and purity, who are content, who have attained excellence, and whose ornament is unblemished conduct, are considered to be the best in all classes. ||132||
Except for those who have a corrupt conduct, who falsely claim to be twice-born, who are always eager to begin sin, and who cruelly kill animals, are not Brahmanas. ||133||
