INTRODUCTION
places him in the 1st century A.D., and identifies him with Mathara the minister, a contemporary of Caraka and Aśvaghoșa, all belonging to the court of Kaniska (A.D. 78-120).
Dr. B. Bhattāchāryya, M.A., Ph.D., places him before Paramār. tha (A.D. 499-560) as it is supposed that Paramārtha translated his vrtti in the 6th century into Chinese, and assigns to him the date cir 500. S. K. Belvalkar, M.A., Ph.D., endorses practically the same view, but Dr. Keith and the late Lokamānya B. G. Tilak have not endorsed this theory.
The theory that Mathara belongs to a period later than the 8th century is untenable; for, he has been quoted by Kamalaśila in his commentary to Tattvasangraha (v. 14, p. 20 ff.). But it may be admitted that the printed edition of the Māthara-vrtti is not exactly the original work as composed by Mathara but contains many spurious matters. Maudgalyāyana
It is difficult to decide whether he is the very individual mentioned
iriya Upanişad (I. 9) to be equated with the one referred to by the commentator or that he is a Baudha Mogglāna by name. Kokula
Dr. Schrader refers to him as Kokkula but fails to identify him. Kāntheviddhi
A patron of Kānțheviddha referred to in Astādhyāyī (4-1-81).is sa named. But we cannot say for certain whether he is alluded to by the commentator or not. Kausika
He is identified by Dr. Schrader as a teacher of Yajur-veda and a translator of Atharva-sūtras. There are two works Kausika-grhyasutra and Kausika-smrti. Are their authors in any way connected with this? In the Mahābhārata, we find a Brāhmana Kauśika being instructed by Dharmavyādha. Is he the one referred to by the commentator ? Mandhanika
Dr. Schrader names him as Mānthanika but he cannot say who he is. If this name is correct, he may be looked upon as the founder of the doctrine of mantha (mortar) mentioned in the Brhadāranyaka (III. 7-1, VI 3-1). Uddalaka, an earnest seeker of truth and an intense lover of wisdom and father of Svetaketu is said to have been its original author.
