persons. Hence the author of the Satărthi had no choice of selecting words for the original stanza in such a way as to be interpreted in a number of ways. Even in this difficult situation he has admirably performed his task.
Pt. Bechardasji, the learned editor, has tried to make the text of the Satârthi easy to understand by providing padavibhāgas and their sadhana. In the introduction to the text he has raised an interesting question regarding the authority of ekākşarī lexicons.
I am grateful to Muni Sri Malayavijayaji who placed at our disposal the copy of the ms. for the preparation of this critical edition. My thanks are also due to Dr. N. J. Shah who translated into English the introduction which was originally written in Gujarati.
