the girl to their camp when she would come out from the cave (p. 199). V. entered the cave, and reached the place where the demon slept with the girl in his clasp. He skilfully substituted himself in the girl's place. The girl wriggled out and left to meet Amśumat waiting outside.

As a true Ksatriya, V. decided to wait for the demon to wake up before he attacked him. The demon opened his eyes, and seeing V. in his clasp, expressed astonishment at the latter's fearlessness. Seeing that V. had clutched a knife in his hand, the demon showed him his sword--like claws. Undaunted by this, V. challenged the demon to fight. The demon asked him about his identity. V. told him he was Vasudeva, belonging to the great Harivamsa clan. Praising V.'s fortitude the demon suddenly transformed himself into a Vidhyadhara of lustrous form. He fell at V.'s feet and told his story as follows:

Mandaradeva offered me to give back my kingdom if I gave him my daughter Citralekha in marriage. But a Caraṇa monk told me that I was destined to regain my Kingdom with the help of Vasudeva of the Harivashsa clan, who would also be Citralekha's husband. He also informed me about your whereabouts. So I came here with Citralekha. To test your strength and know your mind, I assumed the form of a demon and created the cave palace and other things through the power of Vidyās. I will be extremely happy to have you as my son-in-law.
They moved out of the cave and met Amsumat and others. The marriage ceremony was performed. V. spent the night with Citralekha in a palace created by her through the power of Vidyas. In the morning, Citragati left, taking Citralekha with him at V.'s advice.
