Introduction
There are sevaral examples of metathesis (akt written for face, fareat for fafaat etc.); at numerous places letters, words or a part of a sentence are missing; similarly there are cases of repeatition. Regarding the ear mark also we find much carelessness. It is either missing or it is found reduadastly. At many a place mistakes have resulted from joining the SAI wrongly with the preceding syllable or joining the ce with the last letter of a sentence.
Constitution and the presentation of the text
We have adopted ms. . as the basis for our text. When all other Mss. have the same reading which differs from the reading of . and it is not just an orthographical variant or an obvious mistake, we have noted it as खं. विना. In those few places where there is a lacuna in खं. because of the damaged folio, we have adopted the reading of the other mss. Compounds are byphenated, punctuation is made at proper places and proper names are given in bold types.
Corrupt or doubtful readings are indicated by a question-mark in round brackets. Redundant letters or words are shown by placing them in round brackets. Where missing letters or words are supplied by us they are indicated by square-brackets. Where a gap is felt in a text it is indicated by a series of dots.
For the sake of convenience, we have planned to publish the text of VM. in two parts. The present volume coveriog the first part of the text con. sists of the first eighteen Lambbas. This means that we have included in our first part the whole or the 18th Lambha eventhough the mss. incl. ude ooly a part of that Lambha in their Pürvardha. The second volume will contain the remaining part of VM. .e. Tambhas 19 to 36.
