PREFACE
Āc. Haribhadra, broad-minded erudite Jaina Monk, was a prolific writer. His works on Yoga are well-known. Besides the works on Yoga he has written several philosophical works like the Anekāntajayapatākā, the Saddarśanasamuccaya, the Šāstravārtāsamuccaya, etc. This volume contains the Sanskrit text of the śāstravārtāsamuccaya which deals with the main philosophical problems—Existence of soul, Non-violence, 'Causation, Idealism vs. Realism, Omniscience, Permanence and Change, Nature of Liberation, Words and Things, etc. This is really an important philosophical work as it not only explains and examines the doctrines of non-Jaina schools of Indian Philosophy but also points out the rightness of these doctrines from a particular view-point. Thus here the criticism is constructive and not destructive. This is the result of the Jaina attitude of Non-absolutism (syādvāda). The text contains several verses borrowed from the works of others and refers to Brhaspati, Buddha, Dharmakīrti, Jaimini, Kapila, Manu and Vyāsa.
Dr. Dixit has translated the Sanskrit text into Hindi. He has tried to make the translation as lucid as possible. Moreover, he has added explanatory notes either to elucidate a point suggested in a verse or to make explicit its purport. He has divided the text into eleven sections (stabakas). In this Matter, he follows Up Yaśovijayjī who has written a commentary,
