PREFACE
It is really a matter of great pleasure to place before lovers of Indian Philosophy the present edition of Mahopadhyāya Śaśadhara's Nyayasiddhantadipa along with a hitherto unpublished commentary (Tippana) by Guņaratnasūrl who seems to be identical with Gunaratna, the author of Saddarśanasamuccayayıkā (1412 A.D.). A considerable portion of Nyāyasiddhantadipa was printed before fifty years. But this volume gives for the first time the complete and correct text of Nyāyasiddāntadipa.
We are very grateful to Professor (Dr.) B. K. Matilal for undertaking the editing of this important pre-Gangesa text on Navya-Dyāya. He has taken great pains to make the text of Nyāyasiddhāntadipa and also of Tippana as flawless as possible. His introduction is interesting and instructive. Therein he has given good reasons for his contention that Śaśadhara was a pre-Gangeśa Navya-nyāya writer, He has ably discussed the problem of Śaśadhara's date and has furnished strong grounds for identifying Śaśadhara with Śaśidhara mentioned in the Bheraghat Inscription which contains some interesting information. He has given a good account of four Gunaratnas and finally concluded that our Gunaratna is most probably indentical with Gunaratna, the author of Siddarsanasamuccayatıkā. Again, he has noted some textual peculiarities of the Tippana.
Our thanks are due to Pt. Babulal S. Shah for correcting proofs.
We hope that this publication will be of great value to the keen students of Indian Logic and Philosophy.
